I'm looking to get one, im just unsure which brand to get. It'll be used with my 70-200 f4(non is) And i'd ideally like to still use the Af. Does any one know if the 3rd party makes allow the use of this? or wont it work?

Most 3rd party 1.4x TC's will work fine. I used a Kenko Teleplus Pro on my 70-200 F/4 IS, and found AF and IQ to be pretty much equal to Canon's extender. Any 1.4x TC will turn your F/4 lens into an F/5.6,.

Argos have the 2x Canon ex for £191 on their site but sod out everywhere near me. ALso debating whether I need one of these with my 70-200.
 
Best avoid the 2x TC on any zoom. It is best suited to fast primes, and even then it greatly decrades IQ. The 1.4x works pretty well on zooms and can be very good on a decent prime.

There's an awful lot of evidence on these forums that would suggest that you are wrong.
 
On the OP's 500D, a 1.4x will still allow AF whereas a 2x will not.
 
I didn't think the Canon 1.4x worked on the 70-200 or is it the 70-300L I'm thinking of.
 
The 2x TC wil not AF with the 70-200 F/4 on any crop body. The 1.4x will AF fine.
