Yes
my want is to buy the 10-22 1st but I have a dilemma

my camera is a cropped 500d

the 17-55 is an efs thus should work perfect with the 500

but the 10-22 is not efs.

will the 10-22 mounted on my 500 be actually giving me 16 at the widest angle? cause if its the case between 16 wide to the 17 of the 17-55 would make the uwa 10-22 pretty much useless and might as well get the 17-55 in the 1st place if I wont be be getting the wide angle anyway

The Canon 10-22mm is definitely an EF-S mount, so you'll get 10mm. But it WILL appear like 16mm on a 16-35mm lens would appear on a full frame body. It's just the way they work :P

The EF-S 17-55mm on a cropped sensor body will be sort of similar to the EF 24-70mm on full frame. (Not exactly, but nearly!)

edit: Found this as an example... This was taken with the EF-S 10-22mm at 10mm, on a 400D. If I'd used the EF-S 17-55mm, it wouldn't appear quite as wide. However, that's pretty much the same view as an EF 16-35mm lens at 16mm on a full frame body. I hope that makes sense!!

sorry, it's a cr@p picture :p

The 10-22 is EF-s.

The 10-22 will give you 10-22mm with an equivalent field of view of a 16-35mm lens on a 35mm camera. It's still a 10-22mm lens though.

The 17-55 will give you 17-55, with an equivalent field of view of about a 27-88mm lens on a 35mm camera.

Two different lenses, the 10-22 is a wide angle zoom, the other is a standard zoom.

If you've never shot with a 35mm camera then you may as well ignore the 'crop factor' as it makes no difference to you.

Ahh no you are getting confused.

The 10-22 *IS* EFS.

So you are getting equivalent of 10mm on a full crop, or 35mm sensor, which is around 16mm on a 1.6 crop sensor.

However even EFS lenses have their actual focal length quoted. so your 17-55 is 1.6x 17-55 equivalent on your 500D. The focal length of EFS lenses is not corrected to the 35mm equivalent.

So your 10-22 *IS* 10-22. Your 17-55 *IS* 17-55. Actually they would be 10-22 and 17-55 on a full crop, if the EFS fitting would let them fit ;)

Oh and the 10-22 is a NICE lens. I have one on my 400D and 7D. It's nice and W I D E :)

duhhh im dumb. tnx guys somehow I was under the impression the 10-22 is a non efs that was also meant for full frame.

guess the sigma 10-20 should give the same then. Im for the 1st time considering a sigma mainly due to money difference between the 2 is kinda a killer
