Ive seen a lot mentioned about 10 stop but what is it?

From what i can fathom out it has something to do with ND filters.

I wonder when you say, you fathomed it out to have something to do with ND filters, was that A wild guess? As you are correct.

I searched ebay for 10 stop and ND filters came up, but what does it mean, is it a certain type, number as i have 2 6 and 8 ND filters.

The filters you have are 1,2 and 3 stop assuming they are actually 2,4 and 8 as i don't think there is a number 6 ?

10 stop as the name suggests is a lot darker and would be numbered 1024 in the ND range

Edit: Also just to give you an idea your number 2 ND filter (1 stop) allows through 50% of the light where as the 10 stop allows through only 0.098% light.

They are quite expensive, but their main uses are long exposures at sunset or daylight, on water to make it look milky or glazed flat making it reflective, beautiful tones in the sky to drift clouds within a sunrise/sunset or to blur people at say a market or completely non recording of passers by e.g. 30 seconds in daylight.
I do love the ghostly effect they give sometimes to people.

Thanks for the answers, i was numbering them from memory, just checked and they are 2,4 and 8

Yep love the look they give to a photo, right up my street so to speak.

Anyone recommend a good 10 stop

The two 'well known' ones are the B+W ND110 (a screw in filter) and the Lee Big Stopper (a square, slot-in filter).

The B+W simply screws onto the end of the lens, whereas with the Big Stopper you need to buy a Lee foundation kit and adapter to fit your lens filter thread.

Investment in the B+W = between £40 and £90 depending on the size of your lenses.
Investment in the Lee = around £160 to £200 (not checked recently)

B+W has a fairly distinct warm cast to it whereas the Lee is quite cool.

Other filters are available - such as a Hi-Tech 10 stopper which is relatively cheap and fits a Cokin 'p' holder - but friends I know who have / had one have not been very complimentary about it...

You can see a photo with the Lee above, here's one I took when I owned the B+W (taken from the opposite side of the lake than the one above!)
