100mm filters

I am looking at getting 100mm HiTech square nd filters to use on my Canon 17-55mm lens.

I thought by getting 100mm I wouldn't get vignetting however I have been advised by the retailer to get the wide angle adapter. I already have a cheap 77mm adapter ring.

Do you think I need the wide angle adapter?
 
I get vignetting with my Lee 100x150's on a standard Lee holder and adpater and 16-35mm, so I expect you would with yours too.
I could buy the wide angle adpater rig, which recesses the holder back a few mm, but at £35 I really cant justify it, when Lightroom pretty much eliminates it all anyway.
 
I think you'll be okay with that lens. It's not very wide on a 7D.

But try it, if you can. Take a pic at the shop, at 17mm and f/16, see if the extreme corners go dark. A light-toned subject obviously helps, like sky perhaps.

Edit: Tom is on full frame, which gives a much wider field of view.

Oh right ;) Out of interest then, how wide can you go with a standard Lee holder on the D3100?
 
About 18mm before slight vignetting. Thats with 2 slots on the holder and s standard adapter.

18mm on Nikon is about the same as 17mm on Canon crop format, so it's going be close for the OP. Hard to say without actually trying, could go either way.
 
I thought if I got 100mm, it would eliminate the problem as I get vignetting on my 85mm. So please excuse my ignorance - why would I want to change from 85mm?

The HiTech wide angle adapter is £26 but I also think this is pricey if I don't really need it. Unfortunately there us no shop nearby so I will need to buy online. Robert White is quite close and sell Lee, but not HiTech

It depends how wide the lens' field of view is, and how wide the filter holder is. Mechanical vignetting, which is what this is, is actually the holder appearing in the corners of the picture.

As we've established above, you're going to be marginal with that lens at 17mm and the standard Lee holder. When it's nip and tuck like that, the only way to be 100% is to try it - just a mm change in distance from the front of the lens can be enough to allow it to work without problems, or not.

Personally, I'd take a punt on it, in the knowledge that Robert White understand these issues (they may be able to try it for you in the shop, that exact lens/holder) and will refund or change it.
