17-40 16-35

OK I'm after a wide angle lens for my 1D mkIV as we know if you want auto focus (which I do ) there is a rather limited choice.

I don't want and can't justify paying for a 14mm, but can stretch to either the 17-40 or 16-35. I understand the advantage of f2.8 , and believe the 16-35 has a tiny bit of extra IQ.

Now I understand that 1mm difference at small focal lengths is much more noticeable than at longer lengths, but how much wider is 16 than 17.

I'd love to see the same scene shot at both lengths if any kind person is able to do that

If there is a another lens I've missed, shout out ( I'm not sure about the IQ on the sigma 12-24)

The Sigma is nice when you get to around F8, well the first version is. I have it and I quite like it. To be honest I've never been sure if I've got a slightly soft copy or that's the acceptable range. I would post a few images, but to be honest I've never really taken anything worthy of showing off with it, just these two that I like.

1D users are not well served with super-wides by Canon. Don't confuse 16-35 Mk1 with the much better (and much more expensive) Mk2 version.

On 1.3 crop, 17mm angle of view is 78.3 degs side to side; 16mm is 81.7 degs; 12mm is 98.2 degs.

Sigma 12-24 has an okay rep considering how wide it is, and of course the 1.3x crop factor will chop off the weakest areas. It can't take filters though.

Richard, the crop removing the edge weakness is one of the thing you know, but completely forget about, good to be reminded about

Now to get the protractor out and check those angles

There's a great comparison of the 17-40 and 16-35, google it. In short the 17-40 has the edge in almost every single test so it boils down to the 1mm (and additional field of view) and that extra stop!

Something to throw in the mix, how about the Tokina 11-16 F2.8 DX

I know that works on the 1d Mki from around 13mm onwards without vignetting

Canon 10-22 is another that works on 1D-series at a bit up from the short end. You need to do a simple mod though I believe, to clear the mirror. Don't know much about it, but google will bring up plenty of info. Might be favourite optically, it's very sharp lens on APS-C format.

I've read up on the mod to make it work on a 1D, and it's rather simple to do, not sure I really want to start messing around with a £600 lens

Yep no need to mod the tokina 11-16 F2.8, and it does work and corners were pretty OK

I've used 12-24 tokina on 1D and it worked a treat down to 14-15mm, or less with 8x10 cropping.

between 17-40 and 16-35 I'd always go for 2.8 zoom if price is not an issue. 17-40 has messy corners even on 1.3x, more distortion (i.e. less wide than 17mm after correction) and slow.

But then Canon is rumored to bring out a new UWA L in the near future, and perhaps that one will be even worth the money.
