17-40 on a 7d... Waste of cas?

I've decided I want something wider than my 24-105. The 17-40 gets great reviews and I can get one for around the 500 mark. So the question is, is this lens going to work well on a crop frame camera?

Honestly I've never heard of Tonika which is why I was asking. Saw it in a shop and it looked good. Also realised I struggle to photograph inside with the 24-105.

I'm not interested in landscapes, but do want to be able to shoot closer and get more into the frame.

I have got both. Use them both on full frame. The 17-40 was not wide enough or long enough on my previous body a crop 40D, but is great on my 5D mk II. Have not used the 24-105 on a crop body though, got it after buying the 5D2 and selling the 40D.

My son has a 10-22 on his 7D that's an excellent combo, give a similar field of view as my 17-40 on the 5D2 at the wide end.
 
I used that combo at the BHP show for the first time and thought it worked extremely well, if I wasn't on the phone I'ld link to the thread, decent lens and light.
 
Get the Canon 10-22, it's the crop equivalent to 17-40 on full frame.

Or the Tokina mentioned above.

I personally don't get the reason to buy full frame L lenses for crop cameras. You have a crop sensor, you have the opportunity to carry smaller lighter glass, why then stick a huge chunk of full frame lens to weigh it down?

Exactly. And if, and it is an if, a change to full frame body happens in the future then change lenses at that point. Lenses at least keep their value a lot better than bodies.

The 17-40mm f4 was designed as a wide angle lens for full frame cameras. On APS-C cameras it's a mediocre slow zoom IMVHO and you'd be much better off with a quality 17-50mm f2.8. There are several available, there's the Canon 17-55mm, Sigma 18-50 and Tamron 17-50mm and any of these would kick the 17-40mm f4 into touch on an APS-C camera IMVHO and you'll get a wider aperture for low light use and shall DoF.

If you want to go wider than 17 or 18mm (about 28mm equiv FoV) there are several options including the Canon 10-22mm, Sigma 10-20 and 12-24mm and the Tokina previosly mentioned.

Have you thought about the Canon 15-85 IS USM F/3.5-5.6 it's the equivalent of 24-136 on FF
 
17-40 wouldn't be my first choice for a 1.6 crop body.

I have mine because I use it on 35mm film and a 1D3 and I know the 1D3 with 17-40 can get a right royal soaking if I'm out doing landscapes.

If they're wide enough for your needs then EF-S 15-85 or 17-55 f2.8 would be options.

If you want true width (= the 17-40 on 35mm) then as others have said I'd be looking at 10-22 or 10-20 options.

I looked at the 17-40 when I was after something a little wider.
I got told off many on here to go for the 17-55 as it was better suited to a crop sensor, basically what everyone on here is saying.
I did and it is a fabulous lens, basically an L lens without the red stripe lol.

If you want wider again there are few lens out there that will do it like mentioned above.
 
The 17-40mm would be classed as a standard lens on a 1.6 crop. I use one on a 350D and it's versatile but not what I'd call wide. In your shoes I'd only consider one if I was using the 24-105 and I was constantly trying to make the zoom ring go wider than 24mm and didn't go much further than 50-60mm.

If money is an issue, look out for a used Sigma 10-20mm which has been calibrated. Cracking lens if you can get a good one. I've owned a Tokina 11-16mm which is a fabulous lens (taking in to account CA and flare) but it is quite a specialised lens with such a short zoom, even though you get a constant f/2.8 aperture in return for that.
