I've asked this before but I need to do something now.:)

I am going to sell, or if poss, swap my Canon 1.4.

I really need something to cover the 18-55 or preferably 17-70 range. (I use my 70-200 2.8 all the time, but sometimes, it's not wide enough).

So I'd be looking at a second hand lens of that range with a price comparable to my 1.4 (which is immaculate and hardly used).

I've been looking at the Sigma models 2.8 but I'm just a bit worried they might be slow to focus. I guess Canon would be out of my price range.

Any comments? I've never used Tamron, so don't know anything about them.

Don't forget the Sigma 17-70 options are f2.8 at 17mm only, at 70 they are f4 or f4.5 depending on version. I have the older (sharper) non OS version and it is a good backup lens. I've had to use it once to shoot a wedding when the 24-105 packed up on my 5DmkII..... it did well, even in pretty low light. The focus isn't blinding but the price is sure right and the performance is plenty sharp enough on a 7D to keep me happy!

Thanks, I didin't realise the 17-70 was 2.8 only at 17mm. I would keep my 50mm 1.4 but it's too restricting for the type of photography I mainly do). (Horses).

In the title I meant to put 'ish' not 'is'.

Another happy 17-70 user here. Had it on both Nikon and Canon bodies. The copy I've currently got (Nikon) is just as sharp as the Nikon 28-70 f2.8. Marvellous lens for what you pay.
 
If you want fixed aperture then you are limiting yourself quite a lot, even more so if you want to stick to f/2.8.

Basically:

Canon:
17-55mm
24-70mm

Sigma:
24-70mm HSM

Anything else really isn't going to give you the speed of AF or quality that you want for equestrian other than at basic hobby level.

Another alternative would be to save up for a second hand prime in the 20-28mm range to compliment the 50mm.
