2 lenses for holiday

Hi Guys,

as i finally had my holiday approved by my boss last week, i started to plan my road-trip to Portugal. I'm going to be off for 2 weeks, and planning to see as much of this beautiful country as possible. I would also like to make it a photographic experience, so will be taking most of my kit with me. I just have recently upgraded to d300, but at the moment only have 50mm and 28mm.

I was thinking of renting (or if budget allows - buying) a walkabout lens and something for landscapes for these 2 weeks - leaning towards Sigma 10-20mm and tamron 17-50mm 2.8...

Any other suggestions?

Personally, I love to use the 70-200mm range (for getting up close), but it does depend what sort of photography you like.
 
I'm going to Lisbon later this year and my Sigma 10-20 will certainly be in my bag. Still deciding what my second lens will be though.
 
so, you all suggesting something with a bit more range... i'll think about it. Thanks for tips guys...
 
Some people like a super-range 18-200mm, but I would shun that in favour of a couple of lenses with less range = higher quality optically.
 
If I had to cut back to just 2 lenses, they would be the 24-70 f/2.8 and the 70-300 VR. Would be a hard choice beteen the tele and the 12-24 though.

I'm not limited to only 2 lenses, but at the same time do not want to drag 10kg on my back and change lenses every 5 minutes and spend the fortune on them...

My camera bag will be fully loaded (d300 + some lenses, filters, bla, bla + 2 analog bodies and some lenses) anyway, but because we travel by car and plan to drive around the whole country (more, less... ) the amount of equipment is not an issue, unles i have to cary it arround for whole day.

I certainly want to take a lot of landscape pictures, so UWA is a must, and that's why i'm looking at siggy (unless someone can suggest some other lens that can take Cokin filters).

I really don't know what to pick as an "everyday" lens, to keep on the body most of the time, with good IQ and a bit of range; i've heard some good opinions about Tamron, that's why i was looking at it.

Anyway, more recomendations are always welcome. Let me know what you would take and why...

I'd take a fairly decent do it all type lens with a reasonable wide-angle capability and your 28mm prime for the evening stuff.

Job done.

UWAs are really for getting in the middle of the shot rather than "getting it all in".

Tamron 17-50 if you need the 2.8 aperture Nikon 16-85 if you need the extra range and VR. The Tamron is pretty excellent though for such an affordable lens.

Tokina 11-16 (I have on a d300 and is wonderful - check flickr links in the sig)

You 50 and 28 will cover the portrait aspects so yeah something with reach. Doubt you'd need macro (unless you are hunting lizards/animals/insects).

But to zoom I dunno. 70-300 perhaps - but not the cheaper version.

You have 28mm and 50mm. They will do fine for walkabouts on cropped sensor. In fact, just using 1 prime for holiday snaps is great fun.

I'd say get a 10-20mm for landscape. Cracking lens. Just sold mine the other week, as I haven't owned a DX body for years, and kept it just in case I bought another DX body. It's that good, IMO.

Yep, tokina is another option, but not really familliar with the lens or reviews or opinions. It will be a bit of getting used to 28mm and 50mm as i used to have them on D5000 only (manual fun/nightmare), but yes, they both fully capable of producing stunning images, especially portraits!

Wil look at something with range than.

I can't wait for the trip, getting more and more excited every day.:banana:
 
I am having the same dilemma. Going on holiday soon with the family so was considering the 24-70 for general and landscape shots and the 85 for portraits.
 
I mainly used my Nikon 24-120mm VR lens it seemed to cover most things but took my 70-300mm VR one as well but hardly used it.
