21st B'day (Best Settings)

Im going to be shooting a relatives 21st birthday party tonight, i'm going to presume it will be pretty dark where its going on with the disco and all that, so just wondered whats the best settings to use? Im using a 400d with kit lens and nifty fifty + 430ex flashgun. Any suggestions would be grateful.

I'm not the world's best flash photographer so I swing between setting the flash to ETTL and the camera to P or setting the camera to manual 1/125, + f8 and set the flash again to ETTL and let the pair of them figure out the shot

I'd be very interested, like you, in hearing from someone who knows what they are talking about on this point though

If you want to use the zoom range of your kit lens, stick the flash on, TTL as aformentioned and appature priority mode with the lowest appature to get the most light in.

If you need a shot without flash, stick on the 50mm, A mode again, lowest appature.

Or if you want to be using the lowst possible iso/balance flash with abient, manual, 50mm and flash.
