Hi all can anyone recomend a 2 x TC to work with my 24-105 ??

Hi. My understanding is that tc only work on primes which is why I don't have one for my 70-200. save your pennies for a longer focal length?

I have an Jessops one that works but IQ aint that good going on holiday and dont want to carry my 70 - 200 and was wondering if there was a better one..

Hi

The 1.4TC will work with it and you'll still keep autofocus - you'll loose a stop -> the lens will become F5.6 from F4.

I think the 2TC will work, but on the 5D, you won't have autofocus with the 24-105 lens

Hope this helps

Hi

Yes, I think with the 2TC you loose autofocus on the 24-105 with the 5D body,

Would need to be a non canon TC as the conon TCs petrude into the rear of the lens not owned a 24-105 I cant comment but unless it has a big gapping hole in the back like my 70-200 it wont work with the canon TCs.

i use a kenko pro300 1.4x on my 300mm prime and on my 24-105, works spot on with no noticable difference in iq :D

The canon TC's work with the L series lenses.

1.4x TC loses 1 f-stop of light (ex f4 - f5.6), autofocus hit, lens prone to hunting, no loss in IQs
2x TC loses 2 f-stops of light (ex f2.8 - f5.6), autofocus significantly hit, lens prone to hunting, loss in IQs

Canon XXXXD, XXXD, XXD, 7D and 5D bodies will only retain autofocus upto lens + TC combo f5.6, manual focus above f5.6

Canon 1D series camera's will autofocus upto f8, but only centre focus point above f5.6

the full f-stops are f2.8, f4, f5.6, f8, f11, f16 the one in between are 1/2 and 1/3 f-stops

TCs work better on the canon primes as these lenses are designed to work better with the TC. You can use TCs on the zooms like the 70-200mm f2.8 or 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 (manual focus) with differing degrees of success, but you need good light to acheive top performance.

i used a canon 2x on my 300mm f4 prime and its was carp..
but a friend used it on his 70-200 f2.8 and it was fantastic, focused perfect (was a sunny day) and i,q was tip top??

if money allowed i would love a 70-200 f2.8 but for now i'll just struggle on with a kenko pro 1.4x on my 24-105, i know it doesnt give much more focal length but for a £100 odd quid you cant go wrong as it doesnt effect iq and still retain autofocus @ f5.6!! :)
