Looking at my next choices for a walkaround lens, I've mostly been considering the Canon 24-70L f/2.8 as an upgrade to my Tamron 17-50 f/2.8.

the main question I have is, Will I notice much of a difference?
Does anyone have experience of the Canon, or ideally, the Tamron as well?
Any examples?

Thanks in advance :)

I love the 24-70L, been renting one from lenses for hire when I needed one and have just taken the plunge and bought one thats arriving in the morning!

I can't compare it to the Tamron but I agree with Raymond Lin - theres quite a difference between 17mm and 24mm as your widest angle of zoom.

If you're in a position to try it out go and hire one for a few days and see how it feels before you dive right in!

I love my 24-70 for pit lane shots, podium shots and do use it out on the track. If you're shooting horses in show jumping arena (especially a small one), it'll work a treat!

Oh! I primarily shoot sports! :)

it very rarely leaves my 50D :) only to be replaced with the 70-200 f2.8L :).

Highely recomend it if you got the cash.

I loved it when I used it but my second body is a 40D ( x1.6 ) and I just could not get on with it on that camera, it was great on my MK3 ( x1.3 ) but I tend to always have my 70-200 on that !

If I end up getting another 1 series, or a 5DMk3 it will have a 24-70 L on it for sure !

i use mine on my 50D and love it. I chose this over the 17-55 or the 17-50 purely becuase at the end of year i am planning on moving to a 5DII. however since i have had it. bought recently from sale forums on here. its hardly left my camera and to be honest i have a 10-22mm which i use for my wider stuff. I do find it a bit restrictive on the wide end but you cant have it all.

You can when you go FF !

thats true and its not that far away so i am happy for the time being. And its really nice on the EOS .

The 24-70L is a monster. Its better that the 24-105L in almost every aspect. The weight of the 24-70 is something to consider.

im lucky enough to have both lenses. The 24-70 goes on my 5d and whilst the 17-50 goes on my 40d. Both are excellent lens, but I wouldnt 'waste' the 24-70 on a cropped body, its a little too tight. for a crop id recommend the tamron. (please take my comment as constructive criticism for this lens and not a dig at cropped body users of this lens)

And size as well  After years using kit zoom lenses, I went mad and bought the 24-70L and 70-200L. I couldn't believe how big the 24-70L was in comparison

I agree: I too have both and the Tamron width is a bonus on my 40 D. The 24-70 L is quite heavy too.

Not too happy with it on my 30D, thought it would be cleaner and sharper, mind you when the lighting is right it's as sharp as my 70-200 f/4.

Looking for a 5D so will hang on to it, if I wasn't, I think I would sell it for a 17-55 IS.

The canon 24-70 virtually lives on my 5D and I suspect that in the coming months when I change body it'll live on either the 5DII or the 1DIII (cant decide which to go for tbh)
