Apologies in advance if this is a duplicate thread.

My dilemma; to buy a 24-70 which suits what I need or a 24-105 which does the same but with the image stabilised yet lacks larger aperture setting.

Most of the use with this lens will be close range football shots. Does the IS really come in to play when shooting at high speed anyway?

Your views would be most grateful.;)

For football shots I imagine you'd probably want something in the 70-200mm range unless you're actually going to be on the pitch with them.

Out of the two you list, I'd go for the 24-105 (indeed I have one!) just for the extra length. Having said that, I've got no idea what high ISO image quality is like on the 500D, so if it's mostly indoors or floodlit you'd probably want the extra stop of the 24-70.

Thanks Mark
I have a 100-400L for the mid the long shoots from pitch side. This request is more for behind the goal line shooting as the players encroach the penalty area.

I can live with putting the ISO up but would rather not. I guess the winter games when its under floodlights the extra stop(s) would be beneficial. How many stops are there between F4 and F2.8?

for football a faster aperture is more important.
no point stabilising an image if its moving to fast for you to capture.
24-70 f/2.8 id say.

I'd recommend a 70-200 otherwise it's going to distort people at the wider end.
But if the wider range is required i'd definately suggest the 24-70 F2.8
Or if you're looking for a bit of a saving the Canon 28-70 F2.8

One. Which is the same difference between ISO 800 and 1600, i.e., not really a lot. Now if you were to go and splash on an 85 f/1.8, or a 135 f/2, for your closer action shots, that'd be a lot more practical.

The image stabilisation of the f/4 24-105 will be irrelevant in your situation as you are shooting sport so you will need a faster lens.

Usually I would reply 24 - 105, but in your circumstances I think the 24-70 would be the better option. IS isn't really going to help much but you might be grateful for the extra stop.

I think you've mentioned most pro's and cons, but forgot about weight. The 24-105 is 2/3rds the weight of the 24-70.

Where do you stand for the goal line action? I used to stand about 5m either side of the corner flag so that I got the players faces as the ball flew in.

For every extra 'stop' in aperture speed this means the shutter speed can be doubled to get the same exposure, allowing the ISO to be kept down and the players to be frozen in motion. The image stabilisation isn't going to do a single bit of good in this instance where subject movement is concerned.

Think wisely...!
