2nd Hand Kit - worth it?

Know someone with some 2nd hand kit for sale:-

Canon 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS lens - £230
Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8-4 lens - £130

Just wondered two things, how do I find out if a lens is compatable with my 30D.

Second if the above is a good deal?

Just had a look and the 30D is not listed but the 20D is the same for lens compatability .

The Canon lens will be compatible, and the Tamron should be the same as long as it is a Canon fit lens (Tamron make lenses for other manufacturers as well).

I'm not sure about price, but I usually search ebay and look at current prices when buying 2nd hand to see if and how much of a saving I'm making.

Also, you'll want to know if it comes with the original box, documentation, any warranty etc. This can all affect the price when you buy and should you want to sell it on. I always check to make sure that the original lens caps (on both ends) are there. Some people have a habit of chopping and changing.

Finally, check for any damage to the lens body, or any dust inside the lens. This could affect the image quality. If possible, why not take the lens out for a try. You'll get to see if you like it.

Assuming the Tamron lens has a Canon mount they should both be fine in your 30D.

You can get canons new 55-250IS lens now for £180 ish, its better optically than the 75-300IS and the zoom range is more useful, 250 vs 300 at the long end is nothing to worry about

for that price you should be looking at a second hand 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS.

its the later model with better IS and better optical quality.
