32bit & 64bit SYSTEMS

Hi Guys,
nice site this, I like the way all the different sections are set out. Need to get putting some pics up for comments.
I'm looking for a lap-top, primarily for photo processing and video editing.

Have seen a good priced one, but it's a Vista 64bit system.

Am I correct in saying that programs such as photoshop and Nikon's NX2 are only for 32bit systems. I have these programs now, but on a defunct PC.

Basically just need to know if they would load onto the new 64bit lap-top if I got it.

Hope someone can help with an answer.

The simple answer:

Most, if not all, 32-bit software will run on 64-bit Vista. There's only a few exceptions and I can't remember any of the major ones being photography related.

The slightly complicated and not necessarily applicable answer:

The only real issue with a 64-bit operating system and 32-bit software is that while the operating system will be able to address (i.e. access, use, etc) upwards of 4GB of RAM the 32-bit software won't. So you could, in effect, pay extra for something like 8GB of RAM and while it would be available for Vista to use your software wouldn't be able to make use of it.

The easiest answer:

If you can run up a list of the software you're currently using it should be a doddle to see if it'll work with Vista.

Looking on Nikon's site, it seems to suggest that their software is not compliant with 64bit.
I appreciate your comment that 32bit software (if usable) is not making the most of the 64bit system and therefore it would appear that you have paid extra for something that is not being used. That said, the particular lap-top that I'm thinking of seems to be at a very good price point (at a sale price) and less than it's 32bit equivalent from the same manufacturer.
I don't want to miss the offer if it will be suitable, but if it's not suitable then it's not a good offer.

I would very much appreciate hearing from anyone who is succesfully using NX2 on a 64bit system or any further advise / comments.

Thanks for the links to the similar questions.
Double checked the spec of it to see if it would take 8gig of memory - it comes with 4gig as standard but capable of accepting 8.

So, yes it does look like a good deal - looks like the wallet's going to be thinned out a bit.

Will advise back what I find when it arrives and have put some software on and tried it.

Check all the drivers for your devices too....My 1D MKII isn't recognised by the Canon software in USB and there are no firewire drivers at all. Thankfully I can see it is a mass storage, but not ideal!
 
Photoshop CS3 works just fine on 64 bit vista which I have been using for a while now with 4 gb ram. Just make sure you can get 64 bit drivers for any hardware you might use before committing to buy a 64 bit system. I'm more than happy with mine but the XP diehards might say different
 
Plumped for the 64bit system and it's arrived. Just need to get the bits of software I've got loaded on and tried.
