35mm and 50mm Primes on crop?

I really can't make my mind up on this.

I own a d7000 and use three lenses, 35mm prime af-s, Tamron 17-55 f2.8 non stabilised and the usual cheap 55 - 200 4-5.6

I quite fancy a more "portrait ish" fast-ish lens, is it even worth considering a 1.8 D? By my maths it should give a 75mm equivalent fov. Space is limited here so fov is a consideration. The 85mm prime would have be very tele on a crop sensor?

My photography falls into / tends to either be low light "social" stuff or very, very, budget portraiture.

You've got a 35mm prime - do you find this too short for your portraits ? You've the 17-55 - have you used this for your portraits and what focal length have you been tending to use ?

If its around the 50mm then yes, could be well worth the pint for the 50mm F1.8.
 
You've got a 50mm in the Tamron, and an 85mm in the 55-200. You can visualise the difference with those two lenses and see for yourself :)

Personally I prefer a 50mm on DX for short portraits and an 85mm for tighter portraits - no surprise really.
 
I like prime myself but when people talk about them as portrait lenses I always wonder if they'll be shooting between f1.4 and f2.8?

I often find that DoF is a problem at those apertures and when heading from f2.8 and towards f4 a f2.8 zoom may offer additional flexibility.
 
I shoot in a room 14ft x 11ft, I'm approx 8ft away from my subject.

85mm covers head and shoulders perfectly (Head an torso in portrait orientation)

50mm covers a seated subject

35mm a standing subject or even 2-3 subjects together.

Osbert more than comfortable with your current set up. The tamron at fixed f2.8 + the D7000's iso 6400 should be more than enough for your low light and when it isn't, you have your 35mm. For portraits you already have a 50mm and the 55-200mm is great in good light...

My point is, do you think it's the equipment holding you back because I don't :)
 
So the consensus is that neither the 85mm or 50mm primes would add a huge amount compared to what I currently have. On reflection I agree, if I were getting a huge amount of use from either of my current 50mm comparable lenses I could justify the 1.8 50mm, and looking at my exit data I very seldom shoot at anything around 85mm.

So, nope, for now the money stays in my pay pal account.
