35mm plus 85mm.....nifty fifty as well?

Hi

I currently have the nikon 35mm 1.8 G and have the nikon 85mm 1.8 on the way. Both to be used on a D7100.

Was looking at the nifty fifty also however not sure it's money wasted based on the other two lenses?

Would like a half decent telephoto (have a little extra cash to add plus the money saved if not getting the 50mm)

Any advice / suggestions appreciated.

I would not get the 50mm if you have both 35 and 85. May be look for a 70-300 vr. I have the 35mm and had the 50mm, but since I have bought my Tamron 17-50 non vc the 35 mm does not get any use and I sold the 50mm.
 
I wouldn't bother with the 50mm. You already have a couple of fast primes, and 50mm isn't particularly useful on a crop body. It gives the same field of view as a 75mm on full frame which is a bit too long for a walk around, and too short for a telephoto.

Your 35mm is the equivalent of a 52mm on full frame, which was considered a 'standard' lens in the film days, and is a useful general purpose lens. The 85mm works out at 128mm, which is pretty close to the classic 135mm short telephoto, and is also good for portraiture if you're interested in this.

Go for the telephoto. My film gear is Nikon, but I'm not familiar with their current lens line up. Something in the 70 - 200mm or 300mm range is pretty versatile though.
 
I'm doing the same at the moment. Will either be keeping the 35, 85 and getting a 70-200 2.8. Or selling the primes and replacing it with a 24-70 2.8. Either way, I'll be spending the money on a telephoto. Just to echo what's already been said really, if you have the 35, 85, the 50 is pretty pointless.
 
you tell us

shoot with the 35 and the 85 for about 10,000 frames, if you think there's a need for an inbetween focal length then do it, if not then keep what you have
what you shoot and how you shoot should dictate the lenses you own
