Hi all!

I know you probably have a lot of these kind of threads but hey! I would just like to know whether the difference in quality of the cameras (canon eos 350d or 400d) is good enough for the difference in price?

Is it worth buying the 400d when it is much more expensive.

I am trying to buy my first DSLR

thanks

jonny

New, second hand, refurb??

I have a photographic memory that was never developed

Check out the link, it compares the 2 camera's

Personally I don't think the slight changes on the 400D (slightly larger screen, 2 extra autofocus points, 10mgpx v 8mgpx) would make a great deal of difference. The 350D is definitely a better build quality over the 400D, although I think it had the 20D sensor technology, depends what your budget is and the difference in price 2nd hand between the 400D and 350D.

350D 2nd hand £160/200 (body only) with kit lens £240 (depending on condition)

Assuming 400D 2nd hand body £180-230 with kit lens £230-290

Have you thought about the 20D, better camera all round camera bodies start at £200 - 250, but it depends what you budget is

Agree with this, I've also heard of mixed reports re the 400D, the 450D is a big step forward - if you can stretch to it - and gets good reviews

I have a 400d, was not impressed with the quality at 1600 ISO, which was making me think of moving to the 40D or 50D. However, after updating the firmware on the 400D, I have not been able to produce any fair test pics I was not happy with at 1600 ISO.
I do have a couple of dead pixels at long exposures though.

I am thinking of moving from a 350D to a 400D but the only reason, and I am still investigating,is to see if the high end ASA noise control is better

A 450D or 500D would be a much better upgrade, or move upto the semi pro 40D or 50D, new sensor technology and better ISO performance, although not as good as 5D or 5D Mkii which are even better, but more £££

Peter

thanks peter for the advice...should make for some light reading!

I've seen a few 400D's go on eBay for £190 with the 18-55mm lens. Absolute bargain!

if you look at ebay sales you will notice that there is not such a big difference in price between them. 350D should be much cheaper considering its age, but it seems the old DSLR drop to a certain price level and stay there. conclusion: try to get a cheap 400D.

i've played with a 350D, 400D and 450D: the 350D is tiny (like really really tiny; i have small hands and i think its tiny!), and i hate to say it, but the small LCD screen is really annoying. Between the two, based on this alone I'd go for the 400D! of course if you can afford it, i'd go with the 450D :D and comes with a much better kit lens!

The quality of the 400D files is exactly the same, and the extra resolution isn't a big advantage.
If you need the 400D extras (sensor cleaning, better lcd...), go for it, if not, you won't be disappointed with the 350D and the difference can be invested in a better lens.
