Hello there, months ago i used some sort of 1337 ninja hax to make my 400d use 3200ISO, spot metering and some crazy autofocus point patterns.
I dont know if many 400d owners know of this hack, but it is pretty cool.

I've provided some full size samples below for your pixel peeping pleasure, but first here is the link to the CHDK hack posted on another forum.

The following samples were taken with an 18-55 IS - 34mm@f4.5
Converted straight from ACR, everything set at defaults, except all sharpening and NR set to 0.

First shot was lowish light, but not terrible, 1/320s

Second one was very low light, too dark to read a book in shall we say, 1/3s

There is noise in both shots, but still pretty good i reckon. The chroma noise can be got shot of in ACR easily without affecting image quality imo. Some of the luma noise could be got rid of without too much affect on IQ, but not so easy as with chroma. Personally i would do sharpening in PS (via high pass) rather than in ACR.

Here is the second pic with NR and sharpening (tiny amount of NR in ACR + NR and sharpening in PS using layer masks) no colour/contrast tweaks made at all.

This started of as me sharing this iso hack, but i think this thread is just as much an argument for shooting raw too:naughty:

I did the hack a few weeks ago, and just started messing with it a few days ago...

What hack did you use sept2009?
 
same as me then... avoid the daily ones though
 
It's not true iso 3200 though...

And the best software for conversion and noise reduction of high iso Canon raw files is by far Canons own DPP.

Well that seems to be a contentious issue. I would say though, shooting at 1600 underexposed a stop and then boosting a stop in pp would generate noticeably more noise than shooting at '3200ISO'.

In my opinion it is true ISO based on results. Canon don't support this feature, it is a hack, so as far as i know there is no official word on it, the proof is in the pudding for me.

And yes, i have heard DPP is king when it comes to Canon Raw (as it should be) i use ACR because it came with CS4.

there are some daily hack's available, but are unstable so would cause issues, its best to avoid the

I have to admit, looking at posted shots they do appear cleaner than the 'pushed' 1600 examples.
