Anyone recommend a toploader for this (gripped) combo?
Or how do you carry yours?
Thanks,
Mike

What is a toploader? I just use the strap on the camera and the combo is normally welded to my manfrotto monopod...

Sorry Liam, I meant a padded shoulder case of some sort, preferably one that has access from the top and holds only the body with the 400f/5.6 lens attached.

I use these kinds of case when I'm just using the one lens/body combo - keeps things safe in the car boot and when I'm hiking in the mountains - but I haven't seen one yet that's long enough for this combination.

Cheers, Mike

EDIT : Ah - you guys beat me to it!

Bart - yeah, the Lowepro are very good but don't seem to do one long enough. Mike

I use a Topload 75AW with my D3 and 70-200 VR. I nkow its a little shorter but there does appear to be a little bit of "growth" room

'Barney' - I have the same bag and it's very well made; it fits my 100-400 perfectly. But it's 4 or 5cm too short for the 400mm.

Mike

Anything bigger than that and you will struggle I think to get a topload to fit it.

Let me know if you do though, as I've got a 120-300 F2.8 that I could do with sticking in a tolpoad bag.

That'll definitely do the business, desantnik.

At the mo' I have a Lowepro Mini Trekker that also manages with an inch to spare plus room for a whole lot of other lenses. But ideally, I'd go for a long skinny shoulder bag with room for just the one lens + body attached.

I'm shooting lowfly military jets in the mountains and so have plenty of other kit to carry along in a seperate rucksack - food, clothes, maps etc etc. - and the camera seems to work best for me in a shoulder bag on it's own.

'Hoppy' - that looks like an interesting possibility - time for some research; I see they are available in the UK.

Xmas money burning a hole in my pocket!

Thanks fellas,
Mike

Yeah, I've got a ThinkTank Holster. Got mine from Jacobs IIRC. Good design and well made

Note that the base extends quite a bit when you unzip it. Long enough?

Yep, looks long enough when the extension is out.
What do you think - is the extension as well padded as the rest of the bag?
Thanks,
Mike

Not quite, although the base obviously is. You could prolly slip some stiff foam or even corrugated cardboard down there, retained with gaffa tape?

I have a topload 75AW which I put my 50D + 300mm F4 in. It is a VERY snug fit and I wouldn't be able to get anything longer in. The 400mm F5.6 is longer.
