40d exposure issues

Hi all,my dad has a 40d that seems to expose incorrectly. I also have a 40d and at 2 airshows this year his exp comp had to be set wildly different to mine.we both use 100-400s and i had 2/3rds overexposed set. He had to use a stop under! We used all other settings the same. Anyone know why this might be?

Has he tried a full reset to put back to 'factory' settings, just in case something has been altered and forgotten about ?

Which picture style was he using - was it the same as yours ? Has the picture style been altered ?

My first guess would have been metering mode or ISO but failing those things are you sure it's not a sticking aperture / faulty aperture control / lens issue?

Long time ago I had a lens that stuck wide open.The camera displayed the aperture I'd set but everything came out over exposed and changing the lens confirmed the lens to be at fault.
 
Hi Neil,

you don't say which metering mode you're using, just that its the same. If you're using spot metering it can be very sensitive to exactly where the centre point is, ie if you move even slightly it can get very different results.

Have you tried a 'foolproof' test metering something very simple? For example, use both cameras to meter off of a plain wall or something to see if they are really different or if its likely to be down to slightly different techniques.

That's what I'd recommend. It's very hard to be confident that you're using two cameras or two lenses in EXACTLY the same way, unless you take pains to eliminate as many variables as possible.
