40d manual mode aperture advice.

So I shoot in manual mode with the 17-85canon usm at the minute. In manual mode, the aperture stays at 5.6. I can change everything bar that. any advice to get it down to 4 or any other number in manual? The lens supports 4-5.6

What focal length were you at when you couldn't get down to 4 ?

5.6 is the max if you're zoomed out at the 85mm end.....

You only get the widest aperture at the widest zoom length. As you zoom towards the longer end the widest available aperture narrows. There's nothing you can do about this. It's just the way it is.

Note the lens description... f4-5.6. These are the max apertures at 17 and 85mm.

I couldn't do it at any focal length. played about now and managed to do it. You have to hold jump and then roll the wheel.:bonk: And this was wrong too. I always left it on 'on' and didn't turn it that notch higher so that it can activate the roller wheel.
