Hi all

next September (2012) my partner and myself are planning a 5 week trip to New England (Mass/New Hampshire/Maine), the first 2 weeks will be a holiday with her parents and then at the end of the first 2 weeks we'll be getting married over there - hopefully at Marshall Point Lighthouse.
Then we'll be on a our own for 3 weeks of doing our own thing there.

The question is I dont want to be dragging that much kit with me, I'll have the D300s and I'm thinking of trying to do it on 1 lens - i'm thinking either of getting the 18-200 VR or 28-300 VR .

We'll be doing a lot of driving around and stopping in different hotels we think every other night so we dont want to much heavy lugguage with us as we'll have a HD Camcorder and other bits with us (laptop etc.)

Do you think I can get away with one lens ?
We'll be at the coast at lighthouses, small towns/harbours, in the mountains
possible Moose safari and general tourist things.

I'd assume if you are going to be doing lots of landscape type shots you may want at times wider than 28 mm. Not sure what your budget is, but what about a high end compact or m4/3rds camera? Will be lighter.
Not sure about NIKON lenses, my wife uses a Canon 28-135 as a one lens solution which works well. Compromises are not that wide or fast, and maybe not that long for a safari, but image quality is good.

I'd take a 18-200 for sure, and keep that for most things. Then a 50mm f/1.8? For those low light times and a light carry.
 
That sounds like an ace trip!

When I want to travel really light I just go for body and 50mm lens, then a compact for the wider/longer stuff.

I think I maybe looking at the 18-200 now, even though part of me wants the 28-300
but I might look for a cheap 70-300 maybe to go with it.

I might hang on till this time next year incase they release any new lens but I think it's going to be the 18-200mm maybe they'll release a VR III by then !

We'll be taking a point and shoot as well which we'll get near the time, but that I think with be a Lumix I think.

Just need to save a lot of money, should be booking flights before Xmas this year.
 
Why not buy a small wide-angle prime. A 24mm 2.8 or similar. You could likely sell it on when you get back. Takes up very little space, weighs next to nothing, but you would likely use it a lot.
