i would like a 500mm lens, but there are two problems, 1, there is no way on this earth that i could afford a prime? lens in that size, 2, i might not put it to enough use?, all i am thinking is getting a cheap 500mm f8 mirror lens, would it be ok for a noob and complete beginner like me, or would i just be wasting my bit of cash. unless anybody has an old one lying about i could borrow :)

They are quite poor.... if you imagine you will be getting something to make images like the stunning bird photos you see on this forum... think again.

Assuming you have a Nikon (judging by your username!), why not look at the Nikkor 300 f4 AFS, add a Nikkor 1.7x TC and you have 510mm.

I use that combo and its pretty acceptable... and about a fith of the price of a 500 prime!

The other option would be one of the Sigma zooms that are 500mm at the long end.

Both suggestions though are going to be nothing like the crisp output from the 500 prime, but way better than the mirror things.

If he is who I think he is a Canon man !!!
Must agree about mirror lenses though. In general poor quality pics are the result especially anywhere near water. Horrible circular highlights.

My hubby had a pay bonus from work and gave me some money to buy a lens. (it eased his conscience of spending £500 on himself LOL, but who am I to argue?) woohoo I thought, but with lenses £300 doesn't go very far. I wanted a 500mm mainly for motorsport shots and scoured ebay.

I ended up with a Sigma 170-500mm APO and I have to say that I'm really happy with it photographically. The only thing that bugs the butt off me is that the lens doesn't have a lock on it so that when it's on, and you hold the camera downwards the lens slides on it's own accord (like a telescope) and it's annoying but doesn't cause any problems shooting, it stays in place then, its only if you hold it down at an angle for any amount of time.

Considering he's 'new to digital photography' i think that's a little bit unrealistic

Well, he asked about how it was possible to get 500mm cheaper than a 500mm prime!

Hi mate,

Tamron 200-500mm is going for about £375-£400 second hand. If you have a look on birdforum they come up fairly regularly. Its a good lens in good light if you have tripod.

sorry guys i think i mislead some people, yes i have nikon, a D70, and my budget is very, very low, lol.

How low e.g is the 375-400 to high?

yes afraid so, way to high at the moment, was made reduntant and no cash :'(, i also wouldn't mind trying my hand at some music/gig shots, so do i forget the "long" lens and maybe go for a 50mm f1.8 which i could afford if one comes up? which i could use for a portrait/walkabout/gig shot lens?

OOPS, my mistake mistook you for a guy on a bird forum. Same name but changed from Nikon to Canon without changing moniker.

How about this one?

Simply print the picture off and look at it - it's the only way you'll get a cheap 500mm lens

what did you want the 500 for? From the answers above and your budget it looks like a no go.

Maybe a bit of lateral thinking - if you wanted it to get birds (as in pictures of the feathered types) :-) maybe instead build a makeshift hide etc and let them come to you. There are plenty of threads, tips around on DIY create your own reflector, extension tube etc - might be worth a shot and shouldn't cost much.

Good luck!
