50D or D300

After 6 months thinking and looking I have decided to buy. I have two options;

Canon 50D + EFS17-85 IS USM and EF 70-300 IS USM

OR

Nikon D300 + 18-200 VR

I prefer the feel of the 50D and the extra length but from what I can read the D300 has better picture quality.

My question is therefor bearing in mind I want to photograph just about everything, potrait, landscape and wildlife are there any better lens options for my £1500 ish budget for body and lens.

50D has excellent images also I think a lens that has too much range is a bad thing, two lens are better then one long one.

i think they're probably very similar and you'll get similar image quality out of both groups of lenses but obviously more reach from the canon choices.

i'd go for the d300 myself but i really don't like the feel of canons and the layout of their buttons/menus

but obviously if you like the 50d then go for it, other options being that people have said it's not a massive jump from the 40d so a 2nd hand one of those with better lenses might be a good choice.

failing that i'd go for the cheapest cam you're happy with combined with the best glass imho
