Here's my dilemma, at present I have my kit lens (18-55mm) and 35mm 1.8g, which I love.

Now, I've got a couple of weddings (purely as a guest but wouldn't mind trying my hand at some photo's) and a couple of 40th birthday parties (both of who have asked me if I wouldn't mind taking a few photos) to go to this year. My problem is, I can't decide if to sell my kit lens and buy a 50mm 1.8 or sell my kit lens and my 35mm and get the Sigma. I almost had my mind made up on the Sigma but now I'm wondering if getting a 50mm as well as my 35mm would serve me better in the long run. I hardly ever use the wider end of my kit lens but would I miss it if I didn't have it :thinking:


I think what I'm asking the short way is, do I replace my kit lens with the Sigma or the two prime lenses?

What would you do?

p.s. I know I'm the only one who can ultimately answer this but some input would be good :D
 
Being a wedding novice with two under my belt and another two coming up... I'd say go for the Sigma. It will be more useful than another prime for a wide variety of shots; candids, group photos, etc, not to mention fast enough for when the light starts failing or you want to get shots of kids dashing around amongst the guests or the odd drunken dancing uncle. You still have your 35mm for indoor shots or for when 2.8 isn't quite fast enough. If you only have one body and two primes you may find yourself spending a bit too much time farting about changing lenses; I'd go for two primes if I had two bodies to play with, but not if I'm going to be missing the action buggering about my kit every other shot.

I would sell the kit lens and get the sigma. I would keep the 35mm though as the sigma is a little soft at the edges wide open so the 35mm would be usefull to keep.
 
Yeah, I've got a flash but I'm really after a faster lens as well as I quite like the option of not having to use flash all the time, I know a lot of people find it quite off putting have a flash shoved in their face.....Well people I know who'll be at these do's do anyway :)
 
Sorry; read your OP as it being a choice of replacing your kit lens with the Sigma and keeping the 35mm. Ideally I think you should try and stretch for the option I described; I used to use a 30mm prime and a 17-55 f/2.8 on a 50D and it was a very versatile combination. However, you can still use what you've got in the same way; your kit lens for outdoors and flash assisted shots, your 35mm for indoors/low light without flash. I do think you may find it a little frustrating swapping between primes otherwise, and at a wedding you want to be on the ball. Does your flash swivel ro allow it to be bounced? If it does it's far less intrusive and you end up with better results that way :thumbs:
 
Yeah, I have a nissin di622 which I'm finding a pretty decent flash, it swivels and turns etc. I think is probably regret getting rid of the 35mm if I did. :thinking: maybe I should get the people who want the photos to chip in :lol:
