50mm lens

Could somebody please enlighten me on a good 50mm lens to go on my nikon D5000? I'm fairly new to the world of photography and would absolutely love one but I'm not sure on which would be best. My budget is really, at max £250. Not much, I know, but it's the best I can do at this moment in time.......
 
well i cant suggest a 50mm, but as your on a crop sensor like me why don't you look at the 35mm f1.8 its a 50mm equivalent (there about) and i think yo can get them for about £120 and i think its a nice lens (although my experience isn't massive)

Hmmm I'll have a look at that jack thank you very much and much of a realistic price for me. How is picture quality?
 
Sharp sharp sharp. It's pretty much *the* raved about prime lens for most Nikons. Mine never comes off.
 
I'd second the suggestion of the 35mm 1.8 - a great lens that will auto-focus on your D5000 whereas the regular (£100) 50mm will not. I got one to go with my D60 a couple of years ago and have kept it for my D90 - a great lens and one that works better on the crop sensor of the D5000 / D90 / D300 etc.

WOW! That pic is very sharp indeed I might just have to get one of those lenses instead and it seems amazing value for money aswell. I will check out the flickr page when I get home as I'm on my phone now so I'd prefer to look on my laptop. Thank you all very much for helping me out, I think I'd convert to the 35mm now :-)
 
Lol I didn't even notice the eyes till you said that. I was looking at the coat. I'm very impressed!
