52mm -77mm step up ring?

if my lens is 52mm size and i want to put a 77mm filter on do i need a 52-77 step up or 77mm to 52mm step down or are they the same ?

You want a 52-77 step up.

A 77 to 52 step down would be a 77mm lens thread to 52mm filter - I think you might get some vignetting with that set-up!

It's not a lot more expensive to buy a complete set of incremental step up rings which can be stacked to let you invent any kind of step up.
