Any people here gone from a 550D to a 7D for sports photography? (superbikes)

I know they use the same sensor and have similar iso performance, but im hoping the improved AF and shooting speed will give me a noticible improvement in my images.

Would like to hear what others have thought of the upgrade.

I've got a 550D but have borrowed a 7D for similar things. It'll depend on glass. If you've got good quality lenses then yes the improved AF (and obviously burst) will help a lot.

If you haven't then to be honest i'd spent the money on a good fast lens first. A good f/2.8 and maybe a 1.4TC so it'll still work at f/4 i'd say is fairly essential. Maybe the standard 70-200 f/2.8l with a 1.4tc.
You will be sacrificing some video options etc moving to the 7D if thats an issue.

Image quality wise i really couldnt tell the difference between either body at the same ISOs.

I moved from a 550D to a 7D and the main difference is in the build quality and ergonomics. The IQ is very similar between the 2 as you'd expect but if you're struggling with the AF performance of the 550D then the 7D will be a major difference. It takes a bit of adjusting to the AF but it's well worthwhile. Depending on what lenses you already have it would be a worty upgrade, but only if you're struggling with the AF of the 550D.

Glass wise im actually buying that too as part of this upgrade. I have a seperate thread asking for opinions on which telephoto. Looking at either the 100-400 L or 70-300 L

neither of those lenses will give you f2.8 but are good in quality of course.
I upgraded from a 40D to a 7D
the focusing is worlds apart and going back to only 5-6fps is painful :p
