580 ex V 430 EXii

I have found that my 40D has limited functionality with the flash settings using a 430EX, wish I had gone for the 580EX.
Not sure about the 500D, it would be worth checking to see if either is fully compatible.

I have a 5D and use the 430 EX 2. I honestly cannot fault it and what more i dont ever seem to have to mess around with the settings on the flash to achieve what i need.

Although a 2nd hand 580 ex 1 v a 430 ex 2 new...If you are not worried about warranty etc then i would go for the 580.

But for some reason Taztastic has a problem with his 40D? Just trying to find out if it is an equipment issue or user issue?

When I select the custom function menu I get a message saying that it is an incompatible flash attached. I am sure I read somewere that full control of the flash via the camera was only available with the 580.

Functions have to be selected on the flash itself, I don't think there is any limits as to the functions, other than being a pain having to control from two differnet areas, the "clear all settings" function on the camera doesnn't over ride what you have done on the flash, it can be a pain at times.

Otherwise the 430 is a great flash, but as always make sure you won't be thinking I wish I had gone up a model!!

as I'm sure you know, the 430 can only be a slave
580 can be master or slave
I traded up from 430 to 580 for that very reason
(apart from the extra joules)

It's not true that the 430EX has less functions on some cameras. It's just that the MkII versions of both the 430 and 580 flashes can be controlled from the camera, as well as from the back of the flash itself. Not a big deal IMO.

Those are the big differences - the master function and double the power. A few detail differences, like the 580 also has a pull-out hilite panel.

There are more detail differences between the 580EXMkI and MkII, but again they are relatively small, eg PC socket, weather proofing, stronger foot, that kind of thing.

Well I went for a secondhand 580ex mk1 for now and will be using it off camera with an ettl lead for now.
Later I plan to add either another 580 and a 430 or two 430's for fill in and to light the background as well as add an ST-E2 so I can not worry about leads any more. ( I dont want or need a flash on the camera, just one to each side and one on the background)

Good decision, especially if you want to do auto-TTL with remote guns.

Since the 580 is also a master comtroller, you might not need an ST-E2 (which is a master controller only). Connect the 580 to the E-TTL cord (get a long one) and use that as your main light and master unit, then it will control all the remote slave guns wirelessly.

Thats the way I'm going to start with, the 580 on a 3.6m ttl cord in an interfit xs softbox, then probably add a 430 mk 2 in another softbox and use the Nissin Di 622 as an optically triggered slave for the background.
