I'm looking at upgrading to a full frame from my current 550d. My main interests are portrait landscape and macro is main area of interest. I currently have the 100mm 2.8l along with a nifty 50. Others lenses are crop only 18-55 and 55-250.

Whichever I go for I.e mk ii or iii I will get the 24-105 f4. I will keep the 550d but I am undecided whether to go for the mk ii and use the extra cash for a 70-200 2.8. My main concern being that once I have this body I will keep it for 5-6 years at least. Any thought anyone?
 
The MkIII has a better AF system - But that is not really needed for landcape or Macro work

I'd go with the fantastic MkII
 
Im in a similar position, im looking to go from a 7d to either the mk2 or mk3.

I will repeat what i have been told many times, "Dont scrimp on the glass"

My only concern in going with the Mk2 is that the autofocus wont be able to keep up with a two year old running round at full speed. I imagine image quality is superb on both models though.
 
5D's AF system is perfectly fine, well, it may not be good enough if you upgrade from 7D, but from 550D, it's pretty much the same.

get the mk2, it won't disappoint. mk3 is way too expensive for what it offers over mk2.
 
I'm on the other side of the fence, just get the MKIII as you may wonder 'WHat if I just spent that little bit more'.

It can be had for £1995, so no excuse really, bar the £800 saving :p

I disagree :) Because it depends what and how you shoot. The AF alone is worth it to me - But that could be different for others.

Shooting landscapes and Macros does not require a fast AF system (not that the 5D2s is slow)

Used to think like that - I don't any more. Buy what you need and be happy. The 5D2 is a superb camera.
 
I have both cameras. If you have time to set up the shot then the 5D2 will be perfectly capable. If you have to shoot fast, with off centre focusing and no time to check and repeat the shot then get the 5D3. By the sounds of things the 5D2 will be well suited to your needs as they stand today. 5-6 years down the line....... who knows?

okay, i see where you are coming from.

i can't say it worth the money for me, hence my previous post. i went from manual focus using split screen to a few AF points to entry level digital to 5D2, never really experienced more than 11 AF points :dummy:
 
I have the 550D, 5Dii, 5Diii and the 7D. For landscape stuff I tend to have the 24-70 on the 5Dii and I doubt if I'd notice it any different were it on the 5Diii.

Depending upon your budget, if you can afford the 5Diii then it's possibly worth it, but if not, the 5Dii is every bit as good for what you want.

TBH, the only niggle I have with the 5Dii these days is the on/off switch and the lack of a mode dial lock. I much prefer the on/off switch style of the 550D/5Diii/7D and the mode lock on the new 5Diii is great if you are constantly carrying a camera on a strap as it tends to turn if it's rubbed against on the other cameras.

Don't forget, the 5Dii is a brilliant camera which has years of life left in it. It's not the tool of choice for wild birds in flight but that's about it. The 5Diii is great, but it's not as 'great' as the 5Dii was when it appeared.
 
i have a 7d and am also thinking of going for a 5dmk3 primarily because of the sort of photography i am into however, selling the 7d, grip, 10-22 and 17-55 all purchased brand new and taking a hit is a bitter sweet to swallow.....and leaves me thinking on what to do.
 
Thanks all, my main reason for considering the mk iii was that I will not buy another body for a long time and any purchase will just be glass. I thought if I invest in the improved body and have a change of interest in the future I.e wildlife I will be covered and not have to think about changing again. I might have to wait a little longer for more glass but I will have a body that is better across the different genres. Decisions decisions!
 
By then the price will have potentailly dropped a lot though....

Edited for accuracy, unless you can predict the future.

You can get the body for under £2k now as a grey, with the nearest UK/Grey being Kerso @ £2.4k.

No one can predict the cost profile over the coming year or so, but if you find a good deal, have the money and want one, then grab it, no point in waiting for the price to drop or waiting for the next best thing as you'll be waiting forever.

If you have it now rather than a year down the line, then you've saved some money (which you may have spent on other things anyway), but at least you would have had that year enjoying the new camera :thumbs:
 
HDEW are supplying European sourced models with European (including UK) warranty cover for £2179 + £10 delivery. Plus you get the extra two years warranty included. That's where I bought mine.
 
Wow that's a good price for Europe stock, was looking at drev incl the 24-105. Will look at HDEW later. Thanks
