ok well iv decided to make the jump to full frame and am undecided which to go for, both of these cameras are around the same price etc and really cannot make up my mind, i shoot ALOT of night photography using 20 minute exposures etc and alot of gigs too.

which and why?

cheers, phil

what have you got now? i have you as a friend on flickr and your stuff looks fantastic

1Ds is a lot older, not as high ISO as the 5D, ive shot some gigs with the 5D and have no complaints, handles everything fine.
I've been more than happy / confident to ramp the ISO right up and not keep looking to see how things are turning out.
I can only comment on the 5D though as i have never used a 1Ds but i think you will find for your types of photography the 5D is probably the better option.

I don't know about the 1Ds Classic, but the 1D classic suffers cronic issues with long exposures over 30 or so seconds where Amp Glow becomes apparent, due to the sensor design. This is one of the things that put me off buying a 1D classic. It might not be the case for the 1Ds - but research it, there might be niggles in the classic version since it was the first release, that are now fixed.

Used a 1ds for a couple of years, low iso stuff is OK but anything over 800 and you will be struggling, forget anything above 1600 (think it only went up to iso 1250 so I used to underexpose and pull it back using the RAW file.) Although I did do some ballet at 3200 and the results were usable.

You would be buying the 1ds for build quality and wonderful "film like" files if you get the exposure spot on (very little latitude if you got it wrong), 5dmk1 would be better low light stuff.

Never did a 20 min exposure on the 1ds so can't comment I'm afraid.
