5D MKII question - front vs back button focusing

So I've just upgraded from my 7D to a 5D MKII. I was able to have both the front shutter button and the back focusing button in use at the same time, choosing either or. Can I do this on the 5D MKII? I've found where to move it from one to another, but not to have both active.

How on earth have you managed to "move" it from one to the other? The functionality of these buttons is set in the Custom Controls menu, and what you assign to one button is completely independent of what you assign to the other. See page 327 of your user manual.
 
Perhaps you misunderstood me.
Scenario A - front shutter button will focus and activate the shutter. Back focus button also will lock in focus.
Scenario B - front shutter button will only activate the shutter (and not focus), only back button will focus.

I want scenario A. I currently have B.

Basically, I want the option of being able to use both buttons without changing my settings each time. I prefer back focusing, but for the sake of my husband who occassionally takes a snap or two, he'll not understand that and want to do things the traditional way.

Go back into custom controls and set the shutter button to the left option, focus start and meter start, this should be is the default setting anyway.

Wouldn't having both defeat the point of back button focus. One would have to be the primary and I guess if you could set both then front would take preference.

For instance if you use back button to focus then use the front button that would reset the focus. So think it may be a pain but switching in custom functions is only option I have to do this for my wife.

I agree.... But that's what the poster asked for.

As an fyi, program mode will switch it back to front button focus and I think you can set up the custom modes differently as well ( I think)

( I just checked and you can :) )
