5D2 v 7d - For Video and Photos

Hi - I hope you can help me out.

After hours of research watching footage, looking at images and reading I am stuck between either the 5D2 or the 7D.

I have seen documentary's recorded with both cameras using some nice lenses and a rig - I want to do the same but I am torn,

I will also be looking to use the camera for event photography at international motor shows.

Its hard to tell the difference between the two as far as video quality goes, and I know that the 5D2 is FF - but I really dont know what the main advantages over each one is - for mainly video use?

I hope someone can help me out with some pointers as my head is like a sponge!

With a FF camera, you'll get a greater effect on depth of field. Plus, you could put a 50mm F/1.4 on a 5D mk2 and it will be a 50mm lens, on the 7D it'll be closer to 80.

You will also be able to see the difference in the Depth of field, which can cause trouble for focussing.

I would say go for the 5D mk2, it's what I did and I certainly haven't looked back. the 7D is the top of the range crop Canon camera and whilst it's a fantastic all rounder, if your main purpose is for video, go for a 5D and stock up on nice old manual focus lenses and CF cards!

I spent ages wavering between 7D and a secondhand 5D2.

A day playing with a 5D1 made my mind up for me for stills - 5D2 secondhand and I completely love it. Can't wait to do some more video projects with it.... did a nativity with my 500D and the 5D2 at Christmas and the difference in footage was like night and day..... although obviously the 500D is a long way south of the 7D.

At the same time a mate of mine's gone 7D and although it's nice we've shot in a studio side by side and the images from the 5D2 at the same session really are so much more delicious (IHMO).
 
Thanks for your opinions on this, it's helped greatly, the 7D is a nice body but the 5D2 really seems to get the best feedback on the video side.

As for older manual lenses, does anyone have any recommendations please?

It depends really, some you can get for super cheap and others aren't necessarily pricey but they are useful. Pentax screw mount lenses are super cheap and quite sharp, but you can notice CA (chromatic aberration) in the stills.

It all depends on what you are after. Best thing to do personally is have a look on eBay, if there's a cheap old lens with a focal length that you are after or an aperture value which is useful, Pentax have a number of 1.4 lenses, as to Olympus and Canon FD mount ones are worth a particular mention. Then just buy it and pick up the adapter to fit it to EF and you're set! That said, using Canons EF lenses on a 5D mk2 allows you to do fully manual aperture. So you can have all the benefits of modern glass with easy electronic control. Just remember that you'll be manually focussing the whole time :)
 
What focal length are you looking for? FD lenses don't work well on eos bodies as you need an.optical adapter to make them useful, which degrades the image.

Go for something m42, Olympus Om, Nikon or contax/yashica. Do google each lens first though as some will hit the 5d's mirror.
