5d2 Video pause when shooting a still?

WTF. What idiot at Canon thought that was a good idea? Shot video of the demolition in Dundee today and when I viewed the video back at each point I took a still there is a 1.5 second gap, completely rendering my footage useless. I'm raging. Might just put it up for sale this week. Piece of ****.
 
So it's the camera's fault even though it mentions that in the manual on page 136.
 
7D does this too, but it's hardly surprising if your changing from 1080p hd video to using the full sensor to take a still.
 
I doubt they purposefully added the pause, more that it is unavoidable when you're switching from outputting a load of 1080p footage to a 21mp image and back again.
 
What do you expect it to do? It's two different operating modes. One is using an electronic shutter to read video off the sensor, the other uses a mechanical shutter to read raw data at higher resolutions out of the sensor.

If you want stills at video resolutions, just capture the data from the video footage.
 
Straight swap for my 400D, doesn't suffer any issues like this at all.
 
ha ha. Aye right, although in saying that, over the past couple of weeks my Canon A-1 and Olympus Trip 35 have seen more use than the 5d2.
 
I have always been an advocate of keeping stills and movie cameras as two seperate items. My Nikon D300 and my Panasonic HDC-SD600 even if the Panasonic does stills as well.

I find video on DSLRs pretty pointless tbh as the limitations of DSLRs, particularly when it comes to focusing, make the whole exercise a nightmare most of the time.

I appreciate that it allows you to make use of high-quality, fast aperture lenses but surely it'd make more sense for Canon to produce a dedicated video camera which could take EF lenses?
