What is the most suitable to use on a 5D3?

What are the comparable differences?

Ive always used high speed SD cards which are also convenient to use with my Mac as it has an SD port.

I dont really want a CF card reader hanging out of the side of the Mac.

That's something only you can answer yourself surely.

The CF card slot is rated at a higher speed than the SD card one. That I would say is the technical difference between them. So it depends if you need the speed or not, for the likes of video or high speed shooting.

SD slot is 133x max and CF slot is 700x max I believe.
 
Surely the point of buying a camera with dual slots is to use both and have redundancy in camera in case of a card fail

True, however I have just read that the 5D3 limits speed if you have an SD card as well as the CF card inserted.

So a trade off of having a slow/er burst.

I suppose it depends if its being used for sports or portraits!

I think so too. Touch wood, in the 11 years or so I've been using digital I've never had a data corruption issue yet.

The speed limitation of the SD slot might force the no-back up option in some situations for some people.

Incidentally, if you really don't want a CF reader hanging off of your shiny designer Mac :) but need the speed of the CF slot, you can always copy the CF card to the SD card 'in camera' and then upload from SD to your Mac.
 
you can also get a multicard reader fitted internally to your designer mac - if that kind of thing bothers you

Good idea.
 
Or maybe you could just use one of those fancy USB ports to plug in a £10 compact flash reader into the iMac, that way you wouldn't have to choose. Or put it a drawer somewhere when you arn't using it of you are bothered about what you iMac looks like... :)

But basically;

SD Cards - Cheaper, Smaller, Slower

CF Cards - Lots faster, more expensive but chunkier to use and harder to break generally.
