5DII - an annoying Live View puzzle (resolved)

Yesterday I was shooting macro using Live View, and the Zoom button wasn't working to check focus and depth of field.
That was really frustrating....

I assumed it was a setting I must have accidentally changed as last time I used this body was shooting low light at a festival, hence lots of settings were changed. But I couldn't work it out and got on with taking the shots.

However, back home and suddenly the button is working.
Hang on... All I've done is change the lens.
Swap the lenses back and Zoom no longer works.
Eh? What!

It seems that with my macro lens Zoom will not work in Live View :gag:
DoF preview works. Contrast Detect auto-focus works. The only thing I've spotted missing is Zoom.

The lens is the EF 50mm f2.5 Macro.
Any idea what is going on?

Solution is that you cannot zoom in unless the lens it set to MF.
Seems a daft limitation.

I can't remember ever seeing this problem, which surprises me.
The reason it worked swapping lenses, is that the lens that lives on the 5DII is the 24 TSE II which is full time manual focus.

I still don't understand why I haven't met this problem before though....

Happened to me recently as well - but I worked it out.. Frustrating until the penny drops though..
 
and there's more - I found the proper solution !!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a relatively new camera body (I killed my last one).
I bought it used and couldn't fathom out why the previous owner had some of the setting set the way they were, so I did a factory reset.
The zoom problem is a side effect of the factory reset.

Factory default sets the Live View AF Mode to Live Face Detect Mode, which has the symptoms described.
Changing the AF mode to Live Mode allows me to Zoom in Live View any time I want.
Yay :D

Why on earth is that factory default setting :bonk:
