60D vs nikon J1

I've previously had a 450D, I had to sell it for financial reasons but I'm back to being able to afford a camera again, I've already talked myself down from the 7D as 5.3 fps is more than enough. I thought it was ok but then I went into pcworld today and a guy was showing me the J1, I've looked online, it's a nice camera, especially in white haha... Main uses would be for F1/moto gp and other races, maybe holiday and night photography too.

The J1 is cheaper and at £550, I can have 10-30 and 30-110mm in a nice lightweight package with "60" fps, slow mo video and a chance to pick 1 of 5 pictures when the shutter is opened.

The canon was always my 1st choice (until today) and has a lot more choice of lenses but a bit heavier and 2x more expensive for the camera with 17-85

Which would you go for? And any other advice?
 
Realistically decide looking at your own style of living. Don't think so hard about the camera - strange but true. The perfect camera for my needs is a D700, and I own one that I hardly ever take with me because I'm carrying my kids around. it's a very good example of how impartial (internet) research and design can miss out the human factor...

A larger, heavier camera with a nice optical viewfinder, with great image quality, that you won't take everywhere because you value discretion? A light, unobtrusive, silent camera you can use anywhere and take everywhere with a small sensor unsuitable for ultra-thin DoF and a meagre choice of lenses, the fastest of which is f/2.8?

The choice is one only you can make, and you need to accept trade offs. Weight versus quality, discretion versus specifications, ergonomics versus ease of use.

BTW, I own a Nikon 1 series camera and it's far better than you'd think from the reviews, especially in the real world where you can't revolve your life around a camera, no matter how much you want to. If you like it, go for it.

Me too thats why alot of photographers have a DSLR and some kind of a high end compact or CSC camera when they cant be arsed to get out the DSLR :p
 
Personally I'd question buying a J1 ahead of a micro 4/3rds, NEX or Samsung NX if you want a compact system, just doesnt seem like good value to me.

The Nikon does seem to have a slighty advanatge in autofocus(and very fast FPS which you said you didnt need) speed but in terms of image quality it clearly lags behind those other systems(and the 60D) simpley because the sensor is much smaller.

Personally I would buy a micro 4/3 camera (lots to pick from) rather than being tied to a proprietary lens mount by buying a J1. You'll find it cheaper and more flexible in the long term.
 
Dunno if you can find one to hire for a few days?



I got the wife a GF3 Plus kist lens.. but the J1 (I think!) has an adapter you can get for other lenses. So you wouldn't be fully restricted. No idea how good they might be and it would bulk up the camera... But if they work it opens the options!


My wife has so far loved the GF3 with kit (14-45mm lens) and from her pics, she is getting better low light ones that I do on the d300 (ok so I am setting it and not letting the camerra do all the settings so I've probably got them wrong :/ ) Only thing she doesn't like is the flash - camera gets it all wrong at that point... Plus for moving subjects you need to set to Sport mode.


Anyway point is that the little cameras can hold their own. Best if you can borrow or hire one if you are unsure as its quite a bit of dosh if its wrong.


Alternatively see whether the place you buy from has a no quibble return (then you can play for a week - if its not right go back and change for another camera).
