60mm Micro or 85mm Macro

The 60mm won't give you the reach for bugs etc you will have to get too close @1:1 full macro!

Ideally you need at least 90mm or 105 as a minimum!

The 3rd party lens companies do some nice offerings at very reasonable prices that are very good!

Tamron do a nice 90mm and Sigma do an excellent 105mm!

But if you insist on Nikon it would have to be the 105mm!

Thanks for the replies people, does anyone know if the Tamron 90mm f2.8 SP DI Macro 1:1 (Nikon AF D) has a focus motor and will world with the D5100?

There is a new version that I think has a built in motor!
For Macro you will be manual focus anyway!
I dont think mine has!
The focus motor would be handy for portraits as it does double up as a lovely portrait lens!

The Tamron one is so badly made, the guy in the store laugh when I got a demo of it, he started shaking it and you could ear the rattles from the focus ring who is completely loose and also very cheap plastic mount on a £350 pound lenses

I have the 60mm & love it - but for anything moving - now thats a challenge...:D

I have just got a Sigma 180mm Macro on EBay at a price I couldn't pass up...
You may want to look at the 105, 150, or 180 although more range usually helps.

Don't know what lens you were looking at there because the Tamron 90mm Macro has a metal mount and is a very highly regarded macro lens!

Your right about getting close but haven't found this great issue.

Clarity is good and works autofocus

Love this lens it's amazing
