62mm filter - 72mm lens thread..

Oooops!! Bit of a dilemma...
My wife bought me a 10stop Haida at 62mm (as per my xmas list request)...... Only problem is, my lens is actually 72mm !!!! DOH!!! I should have checked the actual lens for size I know but I trusted Google and it failed me, I think, or maybe I hit the 6 instead of 7 when typing my letter to Mr Claus.

My questions/queries is:- are the step down rings any good for this type of filter or will it cause major vignetting??
Would my best option be to send it back to CALIFORNIA!! and order a 72mm replacement??

It might help if you say what lens you will be using it on, for example, you might get away with it on a Telephoto lens, but probably not on an Ultra Wide Angle
 
The Sigma I assume. You may get away with it as this lens was made in two versions with the same aperture range, one having 62mm whilst the other was 72mm and a fair width of plastic inside the rim.

I suspect that the later version has OS

Your 72mm threaded version has a fair size ring inside the filter thread (where the lettering appears). If this is close to 5mm deep then all you might see is the extra vignette caused by the filter protruding forwards (as is always the case)

Doh.

Dave's right though, a 77mm and step rings will cover you for going forward too. Very pleased with my Camdiox 10stop, so much so that I've got thier Circular Polariser and variable ND ready to try out. I know variables can band at higher stops but I thought I'd give it a whirl!
 
Neat! You'll find it might be 9.5 or 10.5 stops, just try it out and you can easily see exactly how far it will go. I have an app called ND Filter Calc (android) that you punch your current shutter speed into and then tell it to apply x stops and it'll give you the new one. Saves me counting on my fingers with my tongue poking out lol
