Yes
Just thought I'd pass this on, was speaking to a well known photographic company (Not WE) who specialise in providing equipment on the web. Was busy ordering my new filters and polarisers as you do !

We ended up having a very interesting chat about the 6d, rumour has it that it will be released in February, with a possible 16-17Meg of pixels and sensor cleaning. That's all I could get out of him :) Not much new stuff there, but that was the first confirmation I had heard myself.

Apparently one of his friends got hold of the 6d prototype, they are having a few issues with the body but he certainly expects a Feb release with a price around £1800.

Please don't shoot the messenger if this turns out to be garbage just thought I'd pass on the comment.

Just adds further to my 5d buy or don't buy dilemna ! :bonk:

Cheers,
Neil

Ties up with rumours of an anouncement late January , probaby, around PMA

People always say they get hold of prototypes etc but it's never true. Canon would never just give out a prototype of a new camera to people outside the company (and probably dont give out prototypes to anyone at all).

Just the same info people have been rumouring for ages - and yes, it will have sensor cleaning, bigger LCD (3 inch probably), live view, better AF, and about 15MP.

And I don't belive it will be called the 6D or 4D, it will be the 5D Mark II.

400D is due for an upgrade aswel. 18 month cycle is over for that seris.

Don't need any rumours to support what Canon will do next, it's just odvious - all you have to do is look at what they have done in the past and look at life cycles for each seris of camera.

Glad to have provided you with some help !
As I said there is nothing new there, just lots of people interested in hearing about the 5d replacement on this site. I don't care what it will be called but I do like to make an informed decision about whether or not to buy, I hoped this information might have helped some. Clearly not yourself.

Yeah I always make an informed decision when it comes to splashing out thousands on a new body.

Personally i'm just about to buy a 40D (within the next few days, probably tomorrow actually) so I will keep it for about a year and then buy a 5D MkII when the prices are a bit lower.

Its quite possible that some people have got their hands on pre-production versions.

On the 12th September, I went to a Canon roadshow in Norwich and had a play with a 1Ds Mk III. It had been announced on the 20 August, yet three weeks later it was available to handle by the public in the UK in a rural town. The camera started shipping in November.

Its quite concievable that there are prototypes being demonstrated by Canon representatives to important clients.

I don't care what it is called ... :D

I have been holding off from buying a second body until I know if there will be a new 5d.

Just wish they would hurry up ... :D

I've never understood the 5d (sorry)
Its not a pro camera - but it's not an amateur either, even Canon have a problem justifying it’s position in the market place.

It’s sort of dis-owned – clearly the pro line up are the 1d, 1dmk2, 1dmk2n 1dmk3 for the fast paced sport news pros and the 1ds, 1dsmk2, 1dsmk3 for the wedding/studio pros with the prosumers 10d/20d/30d/40d and the Amateur 300d/350d/400d/

I think that that the 5d is best described as a prosumer camera with ambitions – possibly serious ambitions but another version? – is this like a ford escort Turbo GTI SRI GTX +++

I’m not trying to be-little the camera, or the people that use it, I just wish that Canon would get their marketing straight; if you want the 5d (and the 6d) to be seen as a pro camera add the features that would make this true – just being full frame is not enough.

For the record I don’t think that the equipment you use defines a photographer as a pro it’s the way that you use it and the way that you treat you client that separates an amateur from a pro, all of the above equipment could be used by a pro or an amateur to create a nice photo, but if my wage depended on it would I trust the 5d - no

Actually, Canon's model number system suggest it is a pro-sumer camera.

Pro - EOSx - EOS1, 1V, 3, 5, 1D, 1Ds, 5D.
Semi Pro - EOSxx - 30, 50, 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D
Consumer - EOSxxx - 300, 300D 350D...etc

The more digits usually translate to lower spec.

Granted, compared to the 1D, the 5D lacks some features, but compare the 5D to the 20D or 30D or the 400D, it is blatantly which is the more "professional" camera and make some of the lower models look and feel like a toy.

I don't understand your reasoning there at all. The Canon 5D was the first DSLR to offer a full frame sensor at a price within reach of many people who otherwise couldn't afford or justify one. The cost of producing the sensors in the 1DS series represents about 75% of the cost of producing the camera, possibly a little more. Gradually Canon are reducing the cost of producing them, and the 5D was the first step in bringing full frame into the main stream and within reach of the 'average' user, which I'm sure we'll see eventually as a logical progression of their full frame development policy.

Lots of wedding and studio photographers don't need the bouncability of the 1DS series, or the weather sealing and machine gun shutter performance, and have welcomed the 5D with open arms. I wasn't aware that Canon were having any problems selling them. ;)

I use 2 canon 5D's for my business and I definately consider them professional cameras. I chose the 5D's over the 1 series as I found them more compact and easier to handle...they've never let me down yet and the image quality is second to none.

It's just a bridge between the 40D seris and 1D seris, as the price difference and feature gap is huge (40D is like £700, and the 1D is over £3,000).

I think it fits into the Canon range perfectly and gives those who, like CT said, don't want to streach up to a 1D (perhaps money issues or just don't need all it's features) a chance to get their hands on a proper, professional grade camera.

I'v always classed the 5D as a pro camera.

I always thought the 5D was the full frame model for the prosumer market
