looking to buy a fast 70-200mm lens for my sons upcoming wedding
looking at
nikon 70-200mm f2.8 vr2
nikon 70-200mm f4 os
sigma 70-200mm 2.8 vr2

all three lens are pretty good , im really interested in the nikon f4 as it has supposedly got a 5 stop advantage.

anybody like to give some opinions on the above lens good or bad

Sorry ... couldn't resist! :) Congrat's to your son, and on the lenses, any one of the 3 is good enough for a wedding. The f/4 gives that extra stop of VR, but you do lose the stop in aperture. But .. it's also cheaper than the 2.8 - I've heard nothing but good things about it tbh. On a D300, you're going to be relying on ISO performance though, and you may pay the price, as the D300 is not amazing above 1600 [some may argue this, but I know from experience with the D90 which has the same sensor and I hate taking that above 1600]

Ifmoney is not an issue I would suggest the 2.8 VRII, it's the best of the 3 all-round. If you're on a budget, the f/4 will do fine, but remember, VR is only useful for still subjects, it won't help when people are on the move.

Which sigma are you talking? The newer OS version? That is supposed to be pretty decent, but the older non-OS version has it's quirks. I had one in the past and didn't like it. Nothing against sigma, I own 2 sigma lenses right now and use them on the D800E.

Personally for friend's weddings I usually only take a short zoom and/or a prime. For my last I didn't even take a flash. I couldn't imagine arriving at a friend's wedding with a 70-200 beast attached, let alone my own son's. When he gets married I'll be more bothered about spending the day celebrating with him.
 
If your son is weeding maybe he needs to see a DR.

the sigma is the o/s version it gets pretty good reviews.
i will enjoy the wedding but i still want to take my own candid shots of the event pointless having a hobby and not using it to your advantage
 
If it's just for a wedding, it's a lot to pay for a VR2, nice though it is. On DX the VR1 is equally able, as the VR2 was optimised for FX (less vignetting for example).

What I would like to know is what other lenses you might have - if you don't have the 24-85 or 24-120 (newest versions) then these may more appropriate for the wedding.

If you do want the 70-200 and it might be mainly for the day - earlier iterations of the Sigma EX 70-200 are highly regarded.

As for the f4 Nikkor - a big minus for that is that the tripod collar is an eye-watering costly extra.
 
I'm getting a nikon 85mm 1.8G to take to a couple of weddings this summer, don't wanna lug my 70-200 around (might spook the wedding photographer!!)

The primes are smaller, faster, and far more discrete. Can take my 50 mm and 24mm if I do fancy a wider shot.

Just an idea..

Out of the ones you mentioned I'd go for the 70-200 2.8 VR II if budget stretches if it has to be one of your choices

don't tamron do a really good 70 200 ish lens?

you could rent a lens if its just for 1 day
 
Love my 70-200 f/4. Easily use its VR at 1/8 sec at 200mm.
And it's sharp
And it's light
And a tripod collar from eBay is £20. But you don't really need one.
I have used the 2.8 version as well as a none os sigma 2.8.
And the f/4 beats them all. Not sure why you would want that extra stop.
 
the f4 nikon 70-200mm gets a good write up is a lot cheaper and not so heavy
 
You can hire the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 vr2 from Calumet for £45.60 per day and if it's for the weekend you get it from Fri until Mon for just 1 day hire.

Sounds like the easiest option to me. I think you have to put the full price of the lens on your credit card whilst it is on hire, so if that's a problem you can try "Lens for Hire" instead who don't usually need a deposit. :)
