Could someone recommend a good protection fliter for my nikon 17-55 lens

A lot a people would suggest not using one because it can interfere with the image quality, especially by causing flare. If you do want one though, B+W, Heliopan, Rodenstock and Hoya's Pro1 and HD ranges are all high-quality filters. You'll find lots of suppliers on the web. Expect to pay upwards of £40 for a good one in that size.

Or you could go for a Nikon NC 77mm filter.... I've a couple of the 77mm's & a 52mm & they dont have any effect on images....

* No UV/'protective' filter can improve image quality on a dSLR.
* All UV/'protective' filters will cause some degradation in image quality.
* The seriousness of this degradation tends to decrease as filter cost increases.
* Good filters will cause degradation that is not noticeable under most conditions.
* All filters, even the best, will cause noticeable degradation in some conditions.

Personally, although its an expensive lens, its reasons like this ^^ why i havent got a UV filter on my Canon 24-105mm. However, that said, if i was to buy one, id go for a Hoya Pro-1 Digital, the 77mm one is quite expensive for what it is but then agin, what 77mm filter isnt expensive?

£35 on Amazon, I wouldn't say it was that expensive.
