7D Battery Communication Fault

Hi everyone. I have 2 third party batteries in the grip of my 7D, had them for about a year now with no problems. I charged them both last night and the charger went through the normal flashing sequence then steady green, then I put them in the camera and got the communication fault messsage, now when in the charger its a constant flashing orange.

Any thoughts on what has caused this, the battery level is shown as empty but everything is working fine. Bad chips maybe?

Have you put them individually in the camera itself and then checked the battery info for each of them This can be found in one of the menus? I cannot remember which and I no longer have my 7D. If you have only tried these in the grip it may be your grip that is faulty.

I have read somewhere that there is a known issue where these batteries when placed in the charger show an orange light but charge OK and work fine.

It seems strange that both batteries "fail" at the same time.

As it happened to both at the same time, are you sure your grip is OK ? I would remove it & clean the contacts, and at the same time, insert the batteries directly into the camera to check if they are also OK.

I have two 3rd party batteries that work fine on my 7D, but show errors on my 6D, so I take it you haven"t updated your firmware recently ?

Hi, thanks for all the replies. Yes the grip is fine, tested with another pair of batteries. Didn't test them individually in the body because I was away at the time in the US and thought I didn't have the door - it was only last night when unpacking I remembered it was stored on the grip chimney - d'oh! The batteries charge but on the in camera menu don't show any of the info - charge performance, shot count etc which is strange as they used to.

I don't know if it was caused by charging using a travel adaptor - but either way those particular two just don't want to communicate with the body anymore.
