7D LCD won't shut off when taking a pic

This just happened last night, while I was at a night rally. Normally, when I bring the camera up to my eye, the LCD screen has always turned off automatically and turned back on when I lower the camera.

However, last night the LCD screen was on permanently, which isn't ideal for photographing at night. I was able to toggle the info button to turn it off, but I then had to toggle it again to turn the screen back on, to check my settings.

I have checked the custom functions, and I can't see anything different than previously set, and consulted the manual, but can find no info on this?

Maybe if I just re-set the camera's custom functions to the default settings, it might perhaps cure it? There are so many custom functions, I may have inadvertantly altered one without noticing, especially when groping in the dark!

Any help or advice appreciated.
 
Has by any chance the little video button got moved (to the right of the eye piece sais start stop but it also switches across) If its set on the red you will get live view and still be able to take pics.
I manage to do it somehow putting mine back in the bag or taking it out.So have now got into the habit of checking mine each time.

I could have this Wrong but the 7D does not have Sensor for the Display, what you are Doing is the Correct way to Disable it.

Are you Confusing it with the 400D you have?

My second camera the 550D Automatically switches of the LCD when you put the Viewfinder up to your eye.

Richard is correct, the 7D doesn't Automatically switch off the LCD when you put the Viewfinder up to your eye, but it should switch off if you press the AF-ON or half press the shutter button.

It'll only do this if it's set up to do so via the menus.
 
I'm pretty sure when I had one I had to alter something on the menus to do this?

Maybe I've confused this with my 50d?
 
Hi,

Now I'm confused.

The only way I find to turn off the LCD is the Info button, pressing the Shutter button, AF-On, has no Effect on my 7D.

If you need to alter Info button settings you have to go into the Spanner menu first left of the Custom menu. Then highlight INFO. button options press Set on Jog Dial and You will find three other Settings you can have to Display if you wish.

If I' in menu, info or previewing an image, the rear lcd will turn off with a press of any top button, do you have preview switched on?

Correct, same as on my 550D, never know the LCD go Blank on the 7D other than Auto power off.

I think I may have dropped a rather large clanger!! As has been mentioned, I don't think the LCD has ever turned off when I put my eye up to the viewfinder, or pressed the shutter-release! :bonk: I reckon I just noticed the screen on as it was my first time using the camera at night! Probably never noticed it in daylight......My 400D does have this feature, though! Therein could lie the confusion. Sorry for sending some of you scatty! :D

If you look at the back of the 400d you can actually see the sensor that shuts down the LCD (little back square that looks like an IR sensor underneath the eye piece) Looking at the rear of the 7d and 50d, there is no sensor!

I wonder why they didn't carry this useful feature across to the xxd and cd bodies??

I'm sure there is a way to disable it via the shutter button though???

Hi,

Same Here, but then I reckoned the 7D has a Bigger battery capacity than the 400s etc so that leaving the LCD on would not matter too much.

True but I don't think it's for that, it's a feature for blanking it out when using the eye piece to prevent glare/light seepage.

Canon have changed the main info screen though, modern bodies have a black background with White numbers/letters whereas the 400d was a White bg with black numbers.

Maybe they thought the more modern displays, not being as bright as the old ones didn't need blanking out?

I knew the 400D had the sensor, but didnt know the 7D didnt :bang:
