Hi all

Has anyone heard or has anyone experienced and issue with a 7d and cf cards corrupting?

I've had three in the last week go arse up.

A relatively new Sandisk Ultra CF Cards, 16 and 32gb.

I got to format them from where I can then recover images using wondershare. Only issue is the cards cannot be picked up or accessed to even format.

Really frustrated, lost a load of photos at duxford today and lost a whole days worth today at Southport airshow.

I really need these photos for reviews I was carrying out at the air shows.

Can anyone help, Inform, offer any insight???

Thanks

Hi gramps. I don't know, the issue I'm having is that I can't even access the cards. Not home yet though to look on a PC, but if it's the same issue as yesterday I might just scream!

Are you formatting the card in the Camera body ?

Formatting will wipe a memory card of everything. I use sandisk own recovery program if I loose anything before formatting. Just deleteing a picture from a card does not do a total wipe.

I have sent you via PM a Sandisk recovery code i have not used. No Idea if it will work but best i can do

I know, but I can't access it to format it. If I could format It could then run recovery programmes on it to retrieve everything.
At the moment it cannot be accessed or read to either get the photos off or even format

Thanks a lot.

I will have a look and see if it helps.

Failing that it's a visit to a pro. I'm actually returning a rental to calumet tomorrow so may mention it to them as well

If the images were successfully recorded, ie you saw them on the LCD, then statistically it's very likely they're still there - you just can't access them for some reason, eg the controller has failed. Deleting images or formatting the card doesn't actually erase anything, it simply instructs the card controller that cells are now available to be rewritten. Golden rule is - stop shooting as soon as you notice a problem.

If something like Recuva doesn't get the images back, then a specialist recovery service probably can (google). See this thread:

Cheers hoppy.

Once the issue was apparent I took the cards out as nothing would write to them.

I tried various different software last night and eventually found one that discovered the images (Icare recovery). I had to buy a license key but it worked and it was the only one that did.

I tried wondershare first as that usually always does the trick, but not This time.

Just need to for at the cards now as still unreadable. Once I've got them "readable" I will format in camera again and see how I go. Will try a different card manufacturer as well as these ones I've had an issue with at next weekends events and see how I go. If it happens again it's likely to be a hardware issue with the 7dii. Either an issue with the buffer (as it seems to happen after a long burst of images as it is writing to card) or a firmware issue.

Have you had problems like this before then? That in itself is very unusual - most people will spend an entire picture-taking career without any card problems whatsoever. This perhaps points to something in your workflow, eg your hardware, or not formatting in-camera etc.

Advice above is good & glad you managed to recover them.

I always format cards in camera, and specifically in the body in which they will be used. From previous posts, could be an issue with formatting in PC or formatting in old body ie not the 7D2?

I have never used MyMemory but they have a good rep on here so unlikely to be knock-off cards.

Apart from dodgy card/bent pin in camera or reader, you mention that that this is after a burst of shots. Perhaps silly question but are you leaving the camera long enough to fully write the buffer to card before switching off?

Well from now on I will always format in camera.

Yep always leave it on. On Sunday I left it writing to the card after long burst and let it hand by my side a strap. So maybe it pressed a button perhaps and interrupted it maybe? It didn't switch off

For the price, I'd be tempted to bin it and get another. There've been a few reader issues popping up recently and I'd suspect that is the problem a long time before I'd think it was the camera.

Formatting will wipe a memory card of everything...

No it doesn't, formatting a card merely overwrites the file allocation table, so the card appears empty to any file management utility but all the 1's and 0's of the files are still there to be recovered.

This^
I've used digital cameras since the release of the 300d (12 years?), we currently have 5 bodies and about a dozen cards, I've had one corrupt card episode, which lost me 3 images following recovery.

Well I shall be sticking to the formatting in camera. Had the cards in my previous camera body with never an issue.
I'll see how it goes but it may be the camera, be it a firmware issue or compatibility issue with the cards perhaps

Always format the card in the actual body you intend to use it in. I've had friends get corruptions from formatting on PC, and any issues your PC or peripheral equipment has could cause a minor issue during the format which leads to the card going tits up. Your camera will format without issues in the structure it expects.

Heck, after I've transferred the files to my PC after I've finished a shoot I re format the card too, and transferring cards from my 6d to RX100 get a fresh format when I place them in the body each time, even if they're blank!

I've never had a card issue since I started digital with my 400d (touch wood!).

TBH once a card shows as corrupted or you get a problem like this I would bin the card or simply use them at home for transferring data between PCs if they still work but NEVER AGAIN in any camera!

What is the cost to you of the lost shots and travel etc compared to buying a new card (or two)?

You could possibly also have a problem with the camera contacts - if this occurs you could have a pin or two maybe making intermittent contact with the card and giving the same problems.
