7d or 5d Classic?

Bear with me here, it’s not quite as daft a question as might first appear (I hope…..).

I already have a 7d, which I think is fantastic, especially for wildlife and birds. I also have my old 40d which I kept for backup and to save changing lenses if I go on safari again or something.

It has occurred to me that I could swop the 40d for a 5d mk 1 relatively cheaply. All but one of my lenses would fit the full frame camera.

But would an old 5d be better than my newer 7d for landscapes etc? If not then it’s not worth swopping my 40d for, if it would be advantageous then I might keep my eyes open for a 5d.

It will depend on your lenses if the 5D is better than the 7D, which lens can't you use and what else do you have?

The 5D will work the corners of a lens much harder but will also make the field of view on lenses wider which might be good. If you've got good glass for the focal lengths needed on the 7D then I wouldn't say much gain is to be had. The main reason I pick up a 5D over a 7D is for getting a shallower DOF with people photography.
 
I have a Sigma 10-20 which obviously wouldn't fit the 5d.

But I have a 24-105 and a 70-200 which would, and are classic lenses for the 5d I believe.
 
The 24-105 and 70-200 (f2.8 in my case) are the 2 main lenses I use with full frame and they are great. Obviously the 24 is going to seem a lot wider than it used to on the 7D/40D but still not nearly as wide as the 10-20. If you are looking to make a strong full frame kit as you move ahead then a 17-40 or 16-35 would be great options, the 16-35 has the same wide field of view as the 10-20 on the 7D/40D.

For me though I sill wouldn't find enough gain in getting a 5D if only using for landscape, if you are doing other things then yes sure. For example the 70-200 on the 5D for portraits is lovely :)
 
I own both a 7d and 5d.. And used to have a 40D too. Just do it. 5D + 24-105 is a great combo and 24mm is pretty wide. Why people think wider is always better for landscapes I have no idea. Shoot a panorama if you need 180 degree shots.

That said the 40D is good bit of kit and the best choice for a cheap backup cropper if you need to have one.
