I am looking to buy a quick release plate for my 7D, but am getting confused by what I see on the internet. Guess it needs to be substantial because of the size and weight on the camers and lens. My biggest lens is a 70-200mm. I have a Benbow Trekker tripod. Any experiences, advice and suggestions would be appreciated.

The quick release plate is normally supplied with the tripod head and AFAIK there are different types. I too have a Benbo and I use two heads with it, a ball and a geared and they both have different quick release plates.
Thanks Alan, I have the ball head. It is just that the QRP at 1 1/2 x 1 inch looks horribly small for the weight and size of the 7D. My cheap Jessops monopod plate is bigger! Pity they won't interchange. Sorry to be dumb but what does AFAIK mean?

Many companies supply an Arca Swiss compatible plate for the 7D, waiting for a RRS B7D one that I bought on the classifieds the other day to arrive. Obviously you will need a head that has the Arca type Q/R fitting if you wish to use a specific plate for the 7D otherwise they are all generic such as Manfrotto or Giottos

Can also get an L Bracket type or one that suits a gripped 7D, many to choose from and off the top of my head pretty sure Markins do one too and no doubt Acratech for that matter as well
Without knowing what ballhead you have its not possible to say whether you can change the Q/R adapter plate for something a bit more substantial

Rich thanks for the info and link. I have a compact ball and socket head supplied with tripod. Checked Benbo site and my system should take up to 8kgs. Having now weighed my camera and lens! they only come in at 2kgs so I guess it should do the job. Guess I am being over cautious with my new camera gear.

Sounds like you are well within the load capacity aassuming that's for the head and not just the tripod weight capacity, sure it will be though.

To be honest the limiting factor won't be the plate itself but rather the head and whether the mechanism (whether ball or another type) is strong enough to hold the camera in place. Obviously the strain on the head will differ depending on what position you're locking the camera in, plus bear in mind that a long/heavy lens will put a lot of strain on it.
With the 70-200 in use, you may find you're better off using a tripod ring so the mount is closer to the centre of gravity. You'll probably be ok using the camera's tripod mount if it's an f/4 but I wouldn't try it with an f/2.8 - indeed the f/2.8 Canon 70-200s come with a tripod ring as standard for this very reason.
