Hi all, I'm looking for a second camera. At the moment I have a Canon 500D with a few lenses and bits and bobs so that's all good. However the wife has been wanting a more compact system for taking around when not needing the big kit we have.

She wants a Canon (I would too as the stuff we have is Canon and like it) so I'm looking at the S95 or a second hand G10. This will be mainly used on Auto, so really looking for something that's good at point and shoot but as good a picture as possible. It may also come to do some night shot as I do a bit of light painting and would like something that might work and capture what I'm capturing if you get me.

What do you guys think?

Thanks

Have you handled them both? there is a significant difference in the size and bulk, for just P&S i would go with the S95 as its so much smaller.

Thanks, no I haven't handled any of them and unfortunately won't be able to, no photographic shops on the Island that stock these :(

Yea I can see the S95 does look like a very neat package, however bonus is having an optical viewfinder in the G10, wants me to sway to it, but then it might be bigger than she would want... ARGH

For me, i need a viewfinder. Trying to take pics with just an LCD is a right pain.

Have you considered saving up a bit more and getting a G11? it has the advantage of a swivel screen, which, for me at least would offset the added bulk given the increased functionality.

Of coarse you may have no interest in swivel screens so there would be no point.

Even if you can't play with those specific models, you could perhaps look at the S100 and G12 to get a rough feel for the size and handling, which are current models so more likely to be a stocked.

I had thought about it but getting the money scraped together by the birthday is going to be pushing it. Even so, I really meant can't get my hands on any decent camera gear locally, all we have is an Argos and even then you can't get to play with the stuff :(

Just in case is there anything else I am missing missing £300 and less?

Personally I see no reason for brand loyalty. Just buy the best at the price you're willing to pay.

There are quite a few options at that price range, you could also be looking at the Olympus XZ1, panasonic LX5, for a tiny bit more money you could get a Nikon P7100, I picked up a refurb Fuji X10 for £300, thats very nice also.

Camera world has two second hand G11's under £300, both with 6 months warranty.. have a look on their site.

Cracking little camera, I wish I hadn't sold mine to them in a way, but then I wouldn't have my 500D if I hadn't done it.

Thanks for the replies guys, really helping out! Some very good other non-canon options there, so will have to check them out.

Camera World with the G11's looks good as well, are they a reputable shop? I had never heard of them or come across them before.
