I've got a canon 7d with a 18-135mm lens. I've got £500 to spend on a lens for weddings and portrait photography. Should I buy a canon 15-85 or can anyone recommend a better lens?
 
I changed over to the 15-85 a couple of months ago after using the 17-40L as my main lens on my 60D. The picture quality is just as good and the range is much more impressive. Taking it on my first holiday this week so hope to get a lot of experience with it.:thumbs:
 
If you are doing weddings, you really should consider a faster lens. That one might do you for outdoor stuff but inside the venue you will not be able to get a fast enough shutter speed.

Portraits, again you probably need better control over depth of field so the 15-85mm is not ideal.

Don't get me wrong, the 15-85mm is a corking lens, but it will do nothing you cannot currently achieve with the 18-135mm for the uses you mention.

Look at a 17-50mm or 24-70mm F2.8 zoom. With that budget I'd be looking at the Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 and a fast prime lens (50mm or 85mm F1.8)
 
Whilst the 15-85 is a cracking lens, I agree with the above - you want a fast aperture for wedding and portrait work.

I'd go for a used 17-55 if you can stretch the budget a little.

Definitely a +1 for this option. I use my 17-55 almost exclusively on my 60D, Sharp, Sharp, Sharp, and just as importantly, Fast. :thumbs:
 
Going rate for a 17-55mm is about £530 and you can get them for less of you don't mind unboxed etc.

I've looked at the Canon 17-55 2.8 approx £600, also Sigma 17-50 2.8 approx £480, and Tamron 17-50 approx £320.

I know make great lenses, but would i really notice the difference if I bought either a Sigma or Tamron lens?
 
You notice the difference in autofocus speed/quality mainly.

The Canon is leaps ahead of the other two. I would place the Tamron and Sigma in the same class on all fronts.
