A little info regarding a new laptop from you Tech Savvy people! :-)

Right...here goes...

Last month my pc packed up and a relative bought me a brand new laptop for my birthday costing £579:

ASUS X52F
Intel Core i3-370m 2.4ghz
2GB Ram
320GB HD
15.6in HD TFT (1366x768)
Intel GMA HD Graphics
Windows 7 Home.

Problem/s..........The left handside of the keyboard has already become lose and rattles when the left handside keys are pressed and overall the laptop seems Sh@t slow. Im always waiting for something to finish loading in the background. My previous pc have an intel core 2 duo processor and only cost me £500 and ran ALOT better than this does.
Its going back to the shop but they no longer have this in stock, so i cant get an immediate replacement, but considering how rubbish its been......im not sure i want one.


They've got a Sony Vaio EE series at £549 (i used to have the NR vaio and regret getting rid of it)

AMD Athlon Dual Core P340 2.2GHz processor
3GB DDR3 1066 SDRAM
320GB SATA Hard Drive
15.6in VAIO display (1366 x 768)
Windows 7 Home

Firstly i need to know if the above AMD processor is any good and is this Sony EE a suitable laptop for the programs i need to run on it: Lightroom 3, PSP X2 & CS5 (all run perfectly fine on my current Asus i3)
 
I'd say generally edting images on a laptop is nowhere near as good as a dedicated monitor - You need to judge angle for the right contrast.

The processor should be ok as I can run on a much slower notebook but I never actually use them on my laptop because it's so hit and miss
 
Sorry can't help you directly with the spec of the AMD laptop.

Computers (whether PCs or laptops) often have non-essential software that loads at startup, which uses up RAM . Some years ago I had a Dell PC that came with DVD burning software that loaded at every boot up.

You need to access a prog called msconfig. I don't know how to do it in W7, but there will be advice on the Net.

Have a look what is being loaded at startup and decide if you really need it. There are only two essentials - the anti virus and the firewall, after that its up to you if you want it.

Is your move from PC to laptop something you need? You get a lot more for your money in a PC and upgrading is easy. You could get a very nice base unit for £500+

I don't think either of those are particuarly good value. Spending that much I would want at least an i3 and 4gb of RAM. Can you get a refund and shop elsewhere?
 
The reason it is slow is probably the fact it only has 2G of memory. I'm with Neil on the i3 vs dual core... Looking at benchmarks (which can be very misleading but...), the i3 is almost 2x the performance of the AMD processor.

And I'm with Jim on the value - for that amount, you can do a lot better...
